Looks like this plant has an extra chromosome.
Olaf, you are a botanist, arent you?? maybe you can explain.

Very interesting flower. It is ugly but still very interesting.
I dont think that it is peloric, because the petals are one-half dorsal not shaped like a pouch. But what looks most interesting to me ist that it has four petals.
It is improbable that it will bloom normally next time, because the flowers are genetically stunted because they are all more or less the same. So most likely this is a sign for a mutation that will occur whenever it blooms.
Sad thing, but in your friends greenhouse, it is still an eye catcher. I bet no one has ever seen a roth that was so spectacular!! ;)

I think is a 1 time "double flowering"...I've seen it already on another 2 roth. that next time flowered normally.is like there are 2 stems fused together...

One was similar to this one...spider shaped multi petaled/sepaled but single pouch...
The other was even more spectacular, cause the flowers were nearly normal but the flower count was doubble!...10 flowers on a single extra fat stem...

I think here are much more specialists and can explain it.
I am not a botinist or a specialist for genetics.

Best greetings

Olaf

Sorry Olaf. It was from talking to Dr.Toshinori Tanaka at JGP, you are very knowledgeable in orchid plants. That is why I thought that you are a botanist.
