I heard that the recent cold wave in Florida has been devastating to the Manatees.

On the news, Sea World assisted a manatee with "cold stress" earlier this week. They said that's only the second time this year. Probably more outside their domain.

Thanks for the update-- in a month we hope to be in the area ... Is Blue Springs State Park the best place to see these amazing creatures?

IMO, yes. There are several places, but Blue Spring is my favorite so far. Homossassa Spring is pretty good too and they have a zoo sorta of other FL beasts you might not see otherwise.

BS is probably the fastest & easiest one to get to from Orlando too. And for $6 for a car load, can't be beat. Take a picnic lunch (or they have burgers, hot dogs, philly steaks on site- didn't try).

Regardless of where you choose, go the morning after a cool evening (cool being maybe 45 or cooler). This drives them to the spring and guarantees sightings. On a warm day following a warm night, you might not see any at the springs because they diffuse back out into the main rivers for grub.
