I'm not sure if I ever properly introduced myself. If I did, sorry for the repeat.

I began growing orchids in March 2011. My first orchid (and I still have it) was a purple spotted, white noid, mini phal from Lowes. I bought that orchid because I saw a big, waxy yellow paph at the botanical gardens earlier that day. Later on I bought a noid cattleya and a noid phal. Then in November 2011 I ordered my first named orchid, and first paph, a Paphiopedilum delenatii from Randy Tajima at Mid-Pacific Orchids. Then relatives and friends gave me there noid phals. I went to the local orchid vendor and orchid show and got more orchids. That first orchid that caught my eye, a paph, held a special place in my heart. I started to really get into paphs and learned everything I could. Then I started focusing mainly on species. And bought my first phrag just this month, a Phrag. pearcei. Only one orchid died because of me. The second orchid I bought, a cattleya. A small division still lives on though.

My other hobbies/interests include birds, Tanganiykan cichlids, gardening, violin photography, cooking, hiking, biking, and snow shoeing.

I also want to say thank you to everyone here on Slipper Talk. You have all helped my knowledge to grow so much. You have also provided some wonderful pictures and humor. And thank you to Leo Schordje who helped my collection to grow and answered my many questions and sent many emails with many pictures and answers to questions.

Great hobbies you have. I, too, cook and snow shoe. Cook is a good skill to know!
When I first started off with orchids I had 3 for a year to see how I would do. Now that I know I can grow them, my collection is growing! From 3 to 80 in 2 years.

Great hobbies indeed! Hello and welcome aboard! Your collection will continue to grow!

Here's the actual paph at the botanical gardens that started it all:

Where in NE are you?

I was the Aquarium Curator at Henry Doorly for a year (the year before the grand opening of their aquarium). Got 'downsized' 5 days after opening the facility:(

What are you doing with Tanaganyikan cichlids?

I was an avid tanganyikan specialist myself for many years. Did some undergrad research on agonistic behaviour in some Julidochromis/Telmatochromis species in college. I became an aquarium supervisor in Oklahoma City, and kept a fair number of Tanganyikan species going there. I published a paper in the old Buntbarsche bulletin (ACA journal) on a specialized cichlid behaviour (I think around 1991 or so).

I live about an hour and twenty minutes west of Omaha. Sorry to hear that you got 'downsized'. I keep Tanganyikan cichlids in a few tanks I have and am trying to get some Neolamprologus brevis to breed. I also have some Julidochromis transcriptus that have bred and have fry, some Altolamprologus calvus, and some Neolamprologus multifasciatus.

I skipped the formal intro myself.
Seems I share half your hobbies.
If you are out our way during winter, have a great place to shoot Histrionicus histrionicus, should that interest you (or anybody else).
I know Yellowstone has a handful, but that was just luck for me that day...

Welcome to SlipperTalk (officially). I used to have African Cichlids for years, but gave them up a few years back. Got to be too much for me to maintain and I had to choose my first love orchids.
