Looking for opinions: Are short or tall pots more advantageous for growing mature Phrags? I asked three AI engines and got three answers. Best to stick to live intelligence for orchid cultural questions.

Which phrags? For bessae, there are several growers on ST using trays.
Phrag Bessie hybrids. I am leaning towards short and wide pots, to allow for a shallow, spreading root system.

That works for me. Trays are also great for seedlings. The only problem is the space that they take up.

ditto on shallow... azalea 'profile' pots for larger plants... and true for all the 'water loving' species and hybrids
I like taller pots for the ones that like to "climb". annoying things. many phrags don't seem to have issues filling up a pot with roots.
My lovely Lynne siblings are all in five inch aquatic pots. The netting sides give added access to air.
All my Phrags are going into yogurt tubs and lava rock. I will let you know how that goes...
Are you using the large Grodan cubes? And just Grodan? I’ve been using a mix of small Grodan and Leca but thinking about moving to the larger. I like the aquatic pot idea.
Will be interested to hear how this experiment turns out with Phrags. I have several Cattleyas in lava rock. They seem to thrive in it as long as they are watered and fed properly.
What size lava rock are you using?
Some are in large grodan and others small. We will see how this pans out. Aquatic pots seem to work well with phrags.
I'm thinking of trying bulb pans. Everything is in clay pots, which help stabilize the heavy plants and cool the roots. I have a few 5", 6" and 8" clay bulb pans. Might be time for an experiment.

I'm sorting it to size and use pieces about 1/2 - 3/4" in size. Larger chunks at the bottom, smaller chunks to the top. Those I have transplanted look to be happily sending out new roots. Time will tell...
I punch a hole in the side of the yogurt tub about 1" from the bottom so there is a reservoir of water at the bottom. Good quality LECA would work just as well (perhaps better) but lava rock is much cheaper and easier to come by for me. Plants are getting K-lite once a week with a mid-week flush with my tap water (GH 4).

If we had less Phrags, or more room, I would grow on wide trays. For stolonous growth, you can air-layer then divide off and plant the new growths.
NYEric - how deep a tray? 3 or 4 inches is close to that of a bulb pan.

I have been moving some of my Phrags to the squaty clay orchid pots that they sell at Home Depot and Lowes. They seem to like it and are growing well.

Most phrags I grow have besseae in the background. Because many of those have an annoying habit of growing upward, I like taller pots to accommodate that better.
