I have Phyllostachys atrovaginata and really love the rich green color, the relatively large diamemeter of the culms for the height of the culms, and the wood is definitely stronger than many of the other hardy Phyllostachys. It is also quite cold hardy. And the shoots have a nice sweet flavor without any bite at all, good raw or cooked.
If one were to test a running bamboo for zone 4 or even colder, P. atrovaginata is a good canidate.
