    How orchids are produced

Working in the lab, I've often thought to myself, this process is just insanely complex and labour intensive. I wonder if people truely understand what actually goes into producing that $50 orchid at the hardware store? So I wrote a detailed overview of the whole process. It's a bit of a...

    Germination advice on Cypripediums

I was hoping someone might have some experience sowing any of the following species? I'm not looking for media recommendations per se, as we use our own, but I'm looking for things such treatment of seeds for best germination, pH of media, germination in dark vs lights or any other...

    Paph charlesworthii

It really is hard to go past a good charlesworthii. An oldie but a favourite for sure. Quite easy to grow and flower too, especially in a warm temperate climate.

    Paph helenae

It’s in desperate need of a repot, but still putting out some nice flowers. Has a booking with the toothpick too lol

    Dendrobium cyanocentrum

Must be the season for it… This one was flowering in flask. Now on cork with some of our native moss.

    For Sale Tissue culture media

I’ve been asked a lot over the years about the tissue culture media I use for slippers and indeed other challenging terrestrial orchids. Kevin Western is now selling W9 and it’s variants that I helped develop in other currencies on his web site. There is nothing we haven’t been able to...

    Importing flasks into Australia

I was just looking up import requirements for some Paphiopedilum flasks coming into Australia via hand luggage on an aircraft. I thought people might find this document interesting as it takes some digging to find it. It’s also interesting for people in the US in particular where you can see how...

    Another year, another tiger…

One of my Paph tigrinum out at the moment. Crossed with rungsuryianum for fun.

    rungsuriyanum and canhii

These are around 3-4 years out of flask. One of the reasons they are so big is that we leave plants in flask a lot longer than most people do. Quite often the plants even flower in the bottle. They’ve more than doubled in size since deflask.

    Cattleya mantiqueirae

Had this one for quite a few years, 7 flowers is not bad. The flowers started off very small when I first bought it.

    While I'm flattered...

While I'm flattered, I've just noticed that the FAVICON used for the website is actually my artwork done for a website of a friend of mine from: https://westernorchids.com.au/ I know it's easy to lift artwork from the internet, but it's not cool.

    Paphiopedilum tigrinum

Another species I’ve been told people find challenging to grow. I don’t find they present any challenge and are reliable flowerers. This one is 7 years from flask 2 days ago. You’re looking at around 4 years to flower from flask, mind you this was a large seedling. Also pictured is a few...

    Paph rungsuriyanum

Not to be outdone, the Australian entrant lol. I’ve heard people find them hard to grow. For me they are one of the easiest species.

    Paphiopedilum helenae 'Red'

First seedling to flower from a flask of helenae 'Red' x self I got a few years ago. There is a small colour break underneath, but other than that it's near perfect. I'm hoping it will go away in future flowerings, but we will see. Kris

    Pterostylis abrupta

One of our native terrestrial orchids. I've heard they're not so popular in the US, not sure why, as they make a stunning display with a large pot full. They're easy to flask, and produce many additional tubers each year.

    Paphiopedilum fairrieanum 'Hoffart'

A nice little fairrieanum just out in flower. A number of people have told me they have trouble with this species, but I've found it to be quite reliable over the last 3 years. The flowers keep getting bigger and improving in shape.

    Bulbophyllum weinthalii subsp. striatum

A very attractive fly pollinated species endemic to the Calliope Ranges near Gladstone in Queensland, Australia. Like many desirable orchid species, they are challenging to grow and flask. I've had my plants for over 6 years now and they put on a brilliant show every second year.

    Various species Paphs

A few species Paphs that have opened in the last few days. They seem a bit earlier than usual, but just in time for the show in a few weeks. Paphiopedilum charlesworthii 'Skunk' Paphiopedilum henryanum 'Jumbo' x 'Chocolate Mousse' Paphiopedilum glaucophyllum

    Deflasking Phrag fischeri

Some Phragmipedium fischeri just deflasked. The second photo is of some I prepared earlier, they've been out for around 2 months. These are grown outside in a shade house in Adelaide. No elaborate heating, cooling and humidifying. The mix is 1 part sphagnum, 2 parts bark and a handful of shell...

    Slipper seeds

Hi, I'm looking for anyone that may have spare seed for sale or trade of various slipper species. Prags, Paphs, Cyps and unusual species like Mexipedium and Calypso. Only interested in species, though really exceptional hybrids are considered. I grow a lot of Australian native terrestrials...
