Darkening the flower, though, won't put back detail in the highlights that are over-exposed. Diffused light will soften the difference between the highlights and the shadows.

Dot's correct, diffusing the light fixes the burnt out highlights - which Ive tried to correct in LRoom. I also darkened the image, which helps a bit, too.
