Hi All,

I thought you might find this interesting. This particular clone was found in a group of Paph. villosum `Fox Valley' AM/AOS (x self) seedlings about five years ago. It's the only one we know of that turned out to be the aureum form; all the rest were normally colored. The flowers open green and white, then turn a rich ivory-yellow color over a week's period of time.

Thanks!

Tom

Congrats Tom, this must have been a lovely surprise when you saw these yellow flowers for the first time. P. villosum f. aureum is quite rare. At the moment only one nursery here in Germany offers young plants with a leafspan of 12-15 cm. The price is 60 Euro that's about 78 bucks.

Best regards from Germany, rudolf

Hi Rudolph,

We were very much surprised when this plant bloomed as an aureum form. Interestingly enough, that price of $ 78 equivalent in Germany is very close to the $ 75 price we had last year when we offered selfings of this aureum clone.

Best Regards,

Tom

This plant is a justification for selfing plants to discover the genetic diversity within a species or a hybrid. Of course, there are dangers of doing such breeding but the few exceptions are worth the trouble. I recently read an article about breeding from Henry Wallbrunn and he specifically mentioned the desireability of F1 selfings; often there is genetic expression that is not seen in sib crosses.
