Here's an oldie that just bloomed for me. The cross (Lucarola X Mem. F M Ogilvie) was registered in 1938 as Blendia. The flower was awarded by the AOS in 1960. While the shape is not up to today's standards, the colors are nice and the flower is quite large for so old an hybrid. NS: 13: cm, DW: 10 cm.

Blendia is a major part of many complex Paphs, having a total of 64 first generation offspring and 1,180 progeny spanning six generations. Some of the most noteable are Paph Sparsholt (1st gen.), Paph Personality (1st gen.), Paph Parry Gripp (1st gen.), Paph Woodruff (1st gen.), Paph Colonist (2nd gen.), Paph World Venture (2nd gen.).

Looks like it has a relationship with Winston Churchill.

While they look similar, strangely, W.C. and Blendia only share a few distant relatives, including Beeckmanii (bellatulum x boxallii) and Pyramus (Hera x Mrs William Mostyn). In Blendia's mix there is one dose of bellatulum and seven doses of boxalli over five generations, which account for the spots. W.C. has one dose of bellatulum and six doses of boxalli over seven generations. so what they seem to share is heavy doses of boxalli, but in different combinations.

Wow. You really know a lot about orchids. That's amazing. Very nice flower, too BTW!

Wow! That is very eye catching. Not great shape but still very lovely. I'm very envious.

Seems that bellatulum and boxallii are indispensable in breeding if you want big wide flowers with strong colour.

Very nice! I am starting to get to like the exhibition paphs more and more. THis is another one to add to the list.
