Has anyone used Espoma's Soil Perfector which is an expanded slate aggregate as the only ingredient in their medium for orchid culture? The bag states use as a 100% medium for orchids. I know it has been recommended as an ingredient for Cypripediums.
Thanks

Expanded shale is not new to orchid culture, but before I made any kind of call on that particular product, I'd want to know the particle size. The stuff I played with in the past was approximately 1-1.5 cm "pebbles", and it was OK, but did not wick as well as LECA.

When I tested the coarser stuff, sold as “Stalite” or the original “Dyna-Rok” (later, Dyna-Gro sold diatomite as Dyna-Rok II), the shale product absorbed only about half the amount of water than did the LECA samples, and being “square” rather than “roundish”, provided significantly less open space, as well.
