Cymbidium goeringii "Kourin" (Japanese variety-orange flower) 日本春蘭「光琳」 As summer comes to an end, Cym. goeringii flower buds start to come up from the soil from my Cym. goeringii collection. This is one of the them. The bigger flower bud is white, (this is what you want for a non-green flower variety so it will bloom with a bright and clean colour). This is as big as a flower bud gets (3-5 cm), should not get much bigger. It stays like this until 1 month before it blooms in Spring 2024. The other bud is still developing so should reach the same size (3-5cm) as the large bud in few more weeks. After they reach 3-5cm in size, just have to maintain them until they bloom in Spring 2024. And no, you don't need the cool temp in the fall to inititate budding, these flower buds are from last year's growths (2 year old growths). This plant will bloom 3 years in a row.

Do you think I could grow this in south Florida? If so, outdoors or inside on windowsill?
Cymbidium goeringii is a temperate hardy Cymbidium. It is the only known Cymbidium species that occurs this far north (in Japan, and Korea and around Shanghai region in China). In these regions/countries, they have Asian summer (30C+ for months) and they have just above freezing temp in the winter (just above 0C). these regions/countries have very distinctive 4 seasons. Here are the temp requirements to grow Cym. goeringii:

Summer: 25C-30C
Spring/Fall: 15C
Winter: 0C-10C (just above freezing)
you want to grow them outdoor as much as possible with at least 50-70% humidity at all times.

If you have this kind of artificial conditions in Florida, of course you can grow them.
