Cymbidium goeringii Zhang He Su (Chinese) 中國春蘭「張荷素」One of the Chinese traditional Cymbidium goeringii alba varieites with lotus sepals. The definition for "alba" form of an East Asian Cymbidiums is different than Western orchids such as your Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Paphiopedilum, Dendrobiums....etc. As long as the lip of the flower is white, green, or cream/yellow lacking any red pigment, it is considered as an alba form regardless the color of the sepals and petals. So, an alba form of an East Asian Cymbidium can have a white lip with red sepals and petals. This flower just opened, and this is the best time to enjoy this particular variety, as this variety, the petals don't hold well. In 1 to 2 weeks, the lateral sepals will start to sag and become droopy (what is called falling shoulder sepals-considered not desirable by the Chinese). This Cymbidium goeringii is grown by Taras Kowalczuk from Flora Peculia in Toronto. I have a couple of Chinese varieites about to bloom but it pretty much concludes the Chinese Cymbidium goeringii varieties. Japanese and Korean Cymbidium goeringii should be starting to bloom by mid March.
