What are these bugs?

I saw these clustered on our magnolia tree a few days ago. Never seen anything like them before. They are about half the size of a fly. I haven't been able to identify them so thought I'd ask if anyone knew. And no....they didn't make it....:fight::viking::fight: Didn't want to take a chance that they were going to eat my magnolia.

Oh wow....thank you. So I won't bother any others that I see on the tree. I wonder what they are doing this far north?

I've read their range is from Quebec to Mexico.

Not yet, but if I had, I'd probably have squashed them because they look a lot like the bugs that inhabit some of my vegetable plants. But now I know better.
