    Paphiopedilum villosum var. annamense

The flower on my little annamense finally fell off today - that was a nice long run of 2 months, as it started blooming around November 20.

Thank you for posting this - how sad, though :-(

    Australia fire emergency

I dug around a bit in the forum's settings and located the ignore feature - highly recommended, as I can no longer see anything unpleasant in this thread (other than the actual topic at hand, which is very sad).

Why is the Koopowitz "Tropical Slipper Orchids" book so expensive?

That's a pretty good price - best one I'm finding right now is $129 plus shipping, which is at about half of the best price I was able to find last year!

Why is the Koopowitz "Tropical Slipper Orchids" book so expensive?

    Makes sense to me, Emydura!

Why is the Koopowitz "Tropical Slipper Orchids" book so expensive?

So you are confirming that there was just one printing, and a small one at that? The original list price was US$59.95, but it is regularly listed now between US$200-$400. This is typically only seen with rare/older books. Sadly, when the library copy of this book is not in my hands, it just...

    Australia fire emergency

Thank you for this article - the tragedy of this situation and the potential loss of so many species has been on my mind. The article mentions one orchid, Thelymitra cyanapicata. Are there others that are known to be at risk at this point? I'm not so familiar with what Orchidaceae species are...

Why is the Koopowitz "Tropical Slipper Orchids" book so expensive?

I suppose it is out of print - does anyone know if it will be reprinted/more available in the future? I love this book, and I am lucky to have access to it in my local library, but I really want a copy of my own :)

    Focusing on slippers

Whatever works best for you with your plants/window, but all options are removable! A trick with the sticky-backed paper is to apply it with water, makes it easily to slide into place.

    Woodstream Orchids has updated list

Ooh, thank you! I've been waiting for this, but will also need to wait for spring for shipping.

    Focusing on slippers

Thanks, everyone! BrucherT, that is excellent use of a failed window seal, I love it :-) Guldal, I have experimented with a few things, but settled on Contact brand clear paper (the stuff that is peel and stick). It looks like a frosted window, and softens the light from a distinct shadow to a...

    Focusing on slippers

Hi Merc! Sounds like we have a lot in common, my house is also surrounded by woods! Luckily it's more open on the east and south side to let a little light in :-) I've bloomed Phals, Paphs, Coelogyne, Maxillaria, Oncidium and Bulbos in these windows. But I'm working on an insulated greenhouse to...

    Wasabi!

I have wasabi, which I grow in a pot outdoors. I've kept it alive for three years now! I have it in the shadiest, coolest, most sheltered location possible and keep it wet year-round. The Oregon wasabi owners vend at some Pacific Northwest plant sales, they are very knowledgeable and helpful. I...

    Separating paphs by temperature

Thanks, both of you for these types of details. To be clear, the type of temperature guidelines I'm looking at are http://www.aos.org/orchids/culture-sheets/paphiopedilum.aspx Based on my shelving locations, all are in front of windows so do experience some temperature fluctuation along with...

    Separating paphs by temperature

As my collection of paphs grows, I am focusing more on separating them by temperature. In my research about cool vs. warm vs. intermediate, I found some discrepancies, but came up with the following general list based on what I have in my current collection of species and hybrids: Warm -...

    Focusing on slippers

Hi, and thank you all! BrucherT, I'm in the northern hemisphere and am growing in a filtered south window (sunniest window) with a filter paper on the glass. Now that it's winter here, I've moved Phrag to the upper part of the window shelves where there is no filter since that the light is...

    Paphiopedilum villosum var. annamense

Thanks for all the ID help with my little plant! I have learned so much from this wonderful thread. Now to wait for my other villosum to bloom to see what variety surprise it might be :)

    Paphiopedilum villosum var. annamense

Here's my plant in question, and the first photo best demonstrates its natural daylight colors. The second photo (side view) best demonstrates its proportions. The foliage is 2.5cm at the widest point, and the flower is about 8cm both tall and wide. I got it from a lovely gentleman at an orchid...

    Focusing on slippers

Thank you both! I hope I can bloom Phrags, we'll see how it goes in the window. I will add supplemental lighting or do pretty much anything for my Phrag Grande because I am absolutely determined to see those magnificent flowers!
