I think you are getting close. My biggest one is just a tad smaller than yours. Maybe this year yours will bloom, mine more like next year.

That is the spike emerging. Can't remember when it finally bloomed late summer / early fall.

I don't know that its common for the specie, I have one that set a bud in the fall, and then stalled until the following spring when it bloomed.
