    Help for Paph. sangii

Always water to the conditions and media, don't use rules. You typically get the best root growth with Paphs by watering less, and keeping a more stable moisture level. I do this by using an open bark mix and a moss on top. The top dressing prevents air from drying the mix so fast and hence...

    How orchids are produced

Working in the lab, I've often thought to myself, this process is just insanely complex and labour intensive. I wonder if people truely understand what actually goes into producing that $50 orchid at the hardware store? So I wrote a detailed overview of the whole process. It's a bit of a...

    Germination advice on Cypripediums

I was hoping someone might have some experience sowing any of the following species? I'm not looking for media recommendations per se, as we use our own, but I'm looking for things such treatment of seeds for best germination, pH of media, germination in dark vs lights or any other...

    Phrag kovachii

Yep, a very nice one for sure.

    Cyp. japonicum

I would say that seems about right. I don’t know specifically for japonicum, but that’s roughly when we do kentuckiense

    Paph charlesworthii

Maybe too humid? They are very much at home here in our dry climate.

    Paph charlesworthii

I don’t disagree. I prefer the smaller more compact forms

    Paph charlesworthii

Another one out, this one is considerably bigger and rounder.

    Paph charlesworthii

Thanks. I think I should make more of this one.

    Paph charlesworthii

I usually give most of my Paphs a fairly dry winter, particularly micranthum and armeniacum. I must admit though these ones still do quite well out in the shade house with natural rain all winter.

    Catasetum pileatum 'Oro Verde'

I do really like these. You still need a hot house even here in South Australia for these, as it’s still not consistently warm enough for them.

    Paph charlesworthii

It really is hard to go past a good charlesworthii. An oldie but a favourite for sure. Quite easy to grow and flower too, especially in a warm temperate climate.

    Paph helenae

I’ve crossed them all, but they are siblings which originated from a show in Singapore around 15 years ago. I deflasked these ones 13 years ago according to my records.

    Vietnamense

Yeah this is a species that isn’t known for the most well shaped flowers. Do you have any other photos from different angles?

    Paph helenae

They’re such good value. I especially like that because they are so small you can usually have flowers from flask in under 12 months

    Paph helenae

It’s in desperate need of a repot, but still putting out some nice flowers. Has a booking with the toothpick too lol

    Dendrobium cyanocentrum

Must be the season for it… This one was flowering in flask. Now on cork with some of our native moss.

    Phrag. kovachii ‘Grande’ x self

That really is a great flower. I’m hoping mine isn’t too far off. This one is 5 years from flask. The old growth got a bit burnt over summer, but the other growth is fine, and it’s got 2 new growths. I didn’t think to take a photo of the roots when I potted it up, as they were really healthy...

    Kovachii flasking

As promised, fischeri, kovachii respread, and kovachii ready for deflask. These are all on W9 with coconut water and alkaline pH. Calcium carbonate is an excellent buffer. Don’t worry about that expensive MES rubbish that Phytotech try to sell you. Coconut water is 30-60ml. We typically use...
