Paphiopedilum haynaldianum

Flowering for the first time, the flower is a little different from the other haynaldianum's I have seen I like it a lot anyway....

I think it also looks a little like lowii, but the staminode looks all haynaldianum.

Bought it from O&M last year as Paphiopedilum haynaldianum 'Dark'

Nice color. The label looks correct to me. Leaves looks very much like haynaldianum.

Does it have spots on the dorsal? That is one of the main characteristics of haynaldianum.

Even if it has spots on the dorsal it still could be the primary, Toni Semple. I haven't seen the hybrid lately so I'm not sure about the staminode

It would be nice to see more of the dorsal, but I'm happy with haynaldianum. A nice coloured one as well.

This is a photo from another angle, the spots on the dorsal are very very pale, but they are there, hard to see them in the photo.
Jean, the flower opened last Friday, so I think it is fully developed.

Interesting, indeed very similar. I would have not know the difference of your plant from a regular lowii nor haynaldianum.

Anyways, what is the point of crossing this two species other than "hybrid vigor"? Honest question. Not a shot on anybody.

Unless one could document where the haynaldianum 'dark' was collected, I would be inclined to believe it was the hybrid Toni Semple. Labels and tags get mixed up over the years. The person who sold it to you may very well believe he has the species, but this flower seems like the hybrid.

I onced had a customer stop by, he pulled tags out of just about every plant he touched in order to read them. Almost half the time, he stuck the tag back into the pot next to the plant he pulled the tag out of. He was vision impaired, problem really thought he was getting the tag back in the right pot. Fortunately I was standing next to him and 'fixed' the problem as we moved through my plants. Point is, accidents happen, labels get lost, moved or become hard to read.

This is most likely the hybrid. Unless you can really track down the history of the plant. Oral histories without documentation are not absolutely reliable.

I had a collected rands haynaldianum 'Vini' ,but completely different from this.It looks similar to the first Toni Semple I had,especially the dorsal.

Very interesting info guys, here are some more photos from one slippertalk member, he took them at the Orchids& More nursery in Germany, my “haynaldianum ” is from the same batch. I think it is impossible to track down the papers and to clarify what this plant really is, all I know is that the haynaldianum’s were imported from Philippines.

When I bought this paph I knew that there is no such “haynaldianum var. Dark”, but I really liked the flowers and the compact leaves so I got it anyway :sob:
