I spotted an area to Download ImageShack Toolbar! I also spotted another area right under that for images I think.

I take it this is an improvement that I somehow missed. Probably really great but what exactly is it and how does one use it? I take it it's for photos and we can now load directly to here?

OK, I take it the toolbar comes bearing unwelcome little additions? Well, it sounded really great. I normally use Firefox and I simply don't see pop ups or pop unders but I suppose if you use their free toolbar you can expect to be allowing them to drop a little "gift" package on you via a bundle.

Thanks Eric.

Actually imageshack has gotten so bad w/ pop-unders that if a post is downloading imageshack I usually just stop it.

You don't need to download their toolbar in order to post pics.

I don't care for all the extra stuff at the Flickr site. I really like the way some people post photos here where you can click on the image and it appears in a new window full sized. Never could figure out how people were doing that and it makes it easier on people who have dial up to have thumbnails in threads.

Eric-

I generally use Firefox and have their Adblock Plus installed which basically gets just about everything but from time to time some websites don’t seem to be compatible with Firefox so I will switch to IE and that was when I was having problems with junk. I am able to click on every photo someone shares here without getting any ads regardless of whether I am using Firefox or IE7. Supposedly, the Universal Solution as shared with me by someone who has forgotten more than I’ve ever known is below.

This should work on Windows systems for all browsers; IE, FireFox and Netscape.
The Windows operating system provides a system-level method to block specific IP addresses before they even get to the browser. To affect this solution you need to edit a Windows system file called hosts. This file is located in the directory:
Windows XP: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K: C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 98: C:\WINDOWS
Open the file in Notepad. C

Feel free to cut the following from this post and paste it to the end of the file right below where you will see 127.0.0.1 localhost. This is my compiled list of ad onslaught offenders based on how we use our computers here at home.

Make sure there is a tab between the IP address 127.0.0.1 and the URLs as shown above. Save the file and you're finished. Close and re-open your browser and something like 99% of the ads you have been bombarded with will be gone. At least it has worked for us.

Unfortunately, websites will in the future buy ads from new sources. In this event, the new ad source needs to be added to the list.

No pop-ops, no pop-unders, no nothing however I have been adding new sources to my list the last few years when an ad bleeds through.

There may very well be a simpler way out there but I don’t know it and this has been working well for us. I don’t know that it will help with garbage that you install on your computer that comes bundled or not which is why we purchase software and steer clear of “alleged” freeware and shareware.

Lauren- I use Netscape 9, which is also Mozilla based. essentially, what works on Firefox also works on Netscape 9 (make sure its 9.....7 was good for its time, but is now useless, and 8 was a disaster)...but without the spyware and viruses (Firefox was an inspiration to hacks when it became popular...) I also will only use IE when nothing, and I mean, nothing! else works...then I run Counterspy when I'm finished...........Opera is also very good, but it is slower than other browsers.....Take care, Eric

I stick to Firefox only because I sort of know how to use it but do as you do and use IE if and only if I have to. Never heard of Opera. My husband swears by your Netscape 9 but it is too slow for me so I swear at it. Kids use IE but are beginning to use Firefox because I refuse to work on their computers and will zero them out if they mess them up. Guess they're getting tired of losing data. I'm not computer literate but was really beginning to get frustrated so one day I brought a whole computer into work and called in an IT guy and showed him all the crap. He showed me how to block crap and I posted what he showed me above. One of my true pleasures in life is looking at everyone's photos of plants when I have time and I felt bad that EricNY was backing out of looking at photos and sort of figured the above was working for all of us so maybe he could get freed from gunk to look at more photos?

I'm seriously not computer literate and had no choice but to get help.

Yes, I have found that when I open pictures from thumbnails that were put on ImageShack that I get pop ups even with my pop up blocker turned on. That is why I go ahead and downsize my pictures and post the picture not a thumbnail. Then those looking at them will not get any pop ups.

I have never had a popup from using the thumbnail....nor have I ever had pop-ups or pop-unders when using Imageshack....maybe because I use Netscape 9. I have had problems with Imageshack....as people saw (and clearly expressed) it appears that I can no longer downsize pictures when I send them...so its either gigantic, or thumbnail....can't seem to get it in between. it used to be easy to downsize it to the size that everyone preferred....Take care, Eric

Although I really like the thumbnail deal as it is probably a real big help to those on dial-ups, I think I'll stick with PhotoBucket and continue to reduce my images to sizes which aren't such a heavy load for folk who don't have hi-speed. I don't have a lot of photos to post so I don't mind the extra time of uploading, resizing, then uploading again here for the few images I have to share.

Thanks for the comments. I pretty much figured out ImageShack is another PhotoBucket type service only you can add a toolbar if you want.
