I have been thinking to convert my multi floral paphs, lowii rothschildianum, and phrags, kovachii and humboldtii, to semi hydro. Would this be a good idea?

That depends on your growing conditions, particularly temperature and humidity.

I tried this method out in NW Iowa which has very low humidity in winter and it didn't work well at all. My water source was also very hard which didn't help.
