This species is native to rocky mountainous areas of Japan. It is a tuberous terrestrial that stays dormant through the winter. I grow it in fine bark mix and keep it totally dry and cool during it's winter dormancy. The plant stands about 6" tall and it is lightly fragrant, about 1.75cm.

For the last 30 years or so breeding has brought about many beautiful cultivars. The Japanese name for the plant is UCHOORAN which means "butterfly wings orchid"

"I grow it in fine bark mix and keep it totally dry and cool during it's winter dormancy." Ooh, how I would kill that one! :rollhappy:

Ah! I wish I can find some in Canada!
Nice growing Ron! It's beautiful

I bought one from Siskiyou Nursery in Oregon quite a few years back...it survived for about 2-3 years, even bloomed for me (not as nice as this, though...) and was perfectly hardy outdoors here. Take care, Eric
