This is the white flowered form of the species, which is typically yellow. A native of Japan, but endangered across its range. Pretty easy to grow if you remember to repot it! Given to rots, just like other's in the genus (ditto Calanthe). The name 'maculatus' is in reference to the white spotting on the leaves, which remain on the plant for a year or so. I grow it outside year round without any protection.

What do you do for good drainage?

I grow them in pots in a mix of coarse perlite and Orchidata with large pumice for drainage. They don't seem to do well if I just let them sit in the same substrate for more than a couple seasons, so I repot them frequently. I've grown them in the ground too, and they seem to do fairly well.
