Paphiopedilum philippinense x sib "Mem. Henry Walburn"

Two weeks ago, I bought this plant at an Orchid Show here in Mexico. Two flowers and one bud. I always I wanted a philippinense and it was love at first sight. I love this plant, but I must confess that I supposed the leaf span in a blooming philippinense was longer. Or is this a compact form? I have read that there are variations (leavigatum, roebbelenii… ) Which characterstics has the clone ‘Mem. Henry Walburn’ and who was he?

Thank you! I really appreciate your comments.

Happy Easter!

Really nice flowers.

There will be various opinions on the type.

To me the plant is compact (may grow bigger in future, who knows) and short spike. So compactum might be the description for it … for now.

....... Or is this a compact form? I have read that there are variations (leavigatum, roebbelenii… ) ......
This is an extremely pretty P. philippinense, good colouration, flower shape and stance, not to forget the twisted petals. If the plant stays in that size with a leaf span of more or less 20-25 cm, you can call it compact, if not .....

hi mario! i am totally in love with the size of your plant and searched high and low for compactums based on dr leslie + guru's var assessment. as luck would have it i was able to acquire a 'Mem. Henry Walburn' and wanted to inquire whether or not your plant has stayed small? can you also speak to it's growth habit. it looks quite vigorous from the photos you posted. 🤞

I purchased one of these as well over 2 years ago, and was told they’re from a Hawaiian nurrsery. The plant was quite compact then but over time has put on bigger growths. Still quite beautiful, but I don’t think this is var compactum but may be on the smaller size range of progeny from plants of varying sizes.

First photo is when I bought it, second was when it fully opened - back in 2021. Third photo is the plant now, showing the old spike, and 2 larger growths. The album form is a plant I bought at the same time that has stayed smaller (and bloomed again).

Nice twisty petals. Very nice! Is it from Woodstream?
