In 2001 Liu Zhong Jian, Zhang Jian - Yong described a comedy orchid growing in Vietnam, paphiopedilum delicatum, in Acta Phytoxomica Sinica. Then he Olaf Gruss, also wrote in "Die Orchideen" about this orchid. From 2001 I went to find this orchid until today 2020 my dream come true.

The new form of Paphiopedilum helenae was described at first as a distinct species in China by Liu and Zhang as Paphiopedilum delicatum.
Last month we combined it in 'Die Orchidee', the journal of the German Orchid Society to a new form of Paph. helenae because the difference was only the colour. ( Olaf Gruss )

A new forma of Paph. helenae was described on Die Orchidee 58(6) 2007 by Mr. Olaf Gruss and Franz Fuchs. Paph . delicatum that was synonym of Paph. helenae was described by Dr. Liu and Zhang in 2001. But some dictinctive feature of Paph. delicatum described in China including color of flower was defferent from Paph. helenae and Mr. Gruss and Fuchs decrived the species as a new forma of Paph. helenae. The linked pic is lovely. I don't understand why the pics above are not it, but rather the type form of helenae.

The tag from Hakones plant is from Orchids & more. They got some plants labeled as helenae delicatum years ago within an import. All turned out as normal helenae.

Olaf posted this photo of Paph. helenae f. delicatum on FB this week to show its distinctive coloring:

Olaf's delicatum

In 2000, Mr. Leonid Aver. discovered a orchid in Cao Bang, Trung Khanh , near Thang Hen Lake. He named the paphiopedilum helenae (his wife's name) and registered at Kiew, England.

In 2001, at the Whutongshan orchid garden, in Shenzhen, Mr. Liu and Mr. Zhang, described a orchid from Vietnam, named paphiopedilum Delicatum. These is not registered at Kiew, UK. If at that time, would not be accepted because in fact his paphiopedilum Delicatum is just a phaphiopedilum helenae (which was registered by Mr. Leonid Aver.) In 2001, if at that time the name was changed to phaphiopedilum helenae forma Delicatum, it would certainly be approved (it is said why the name was not recognized, thereby changing the name).

In 2007, 6 years later, Mr. Olaf Gruss described a pink orchid in Austria, registered at Kiew as paphiopedilum helenae delicatum, and was accepted. Perhaps at registration, Mr. Gruss could choose a different name instead of Delicatum, but used the old names of Mr. Liu and Zhang.

These 2 plants are actually helenae orchids, just different colors. Olaf's delicatum is pink, and Liu and Zhang's trees are yellow and dark brown.

In terms of orchid Collection, the two most important factors are:
1 / - Form
2/- Color
Olaf's delicatum Form is not quite as beautiful as Liu and Zhang's delicatum. But the pink of Delicatum Olaf is more beautiful.

That is the truth. Depending on the collector look.
