When I use the sky as a background; I (1) stand in a shaded area. (2) hold plant up to sky. (3) Have the sun behind the shaded area. (4) Use close up mode. (5) Use fill in flash.

Try it a few different distances from flower and take the best shot. The flower should not be directly in the sun when taking the picture.
