This seedling came from a flask I got in Japan a couple years ago. The parents were both type but half album.
The bud seemed to take weeks to open! The plant is very tiny so the flower was immediately cut off and the pollen was put onto a type sibling. Hopefully it was a sibling carrying the album gene.

I know a lot is simply personal preferences, but can someone tell me what attracts folks to alba versions of plants? I like the variety of colors in my plants, so it seems "ho hum" when they have the color bred out, so unless there is some good reason for future breeding...

Does it have to be an either or? I love both the typical and the albinistic forms of many, maybe most Paphs. As Mae West succintly put it: "Too much of a good thing can be wonderful!". ;)

Take a look at 'eggshell's splendid P. philippinense alba (recte: P. philippinense fma. alboflavum = white-yellow).It's a highly aesthetic enjoyment to watch - the albinistic traits add IMHO to a more spatial, sculptural experience than the typical form (which I of course also love!):

DrLeslieEe's magnificent P. villosum fma. aureum (=golden) is an example of the albinistic form adding to "the variety of colors" in this species:
https://www.slippertalk.com/threads/paphiopedilum-villosum-forma-aureum-piping-rock-am-aos.48324/

(As does my own 'Red' form of villosum compared to the more widespread coloured clones:
https://www.slippertalk.com/threads/paphiopedilum-villosum-red.47229/)

If you take a look at DrLeslieEe's excellent P. lowii fma. aureum (pictures a bit down in this thread), I think one should have a heart made of stone for it not to melt:
https://www.slippertalk.com/threads/paph-lowii-var-album.47819/

If albinistic forms really does not appeal to you, maybe the desentization therapy could begin with exposure to P. concolor fma. sulphurinum or P. x wenshanense fma. aureum, that might be a bit easier to stomach for most people than then green-white plants (and ok, Ray, I will give you that: I can see, why some people find there might be a certain sameness to the green-white flowers):

https://www.slippertalk.com/threads/wenshanense-aureum.45798/

Oh, I think, I got so carried away, that I forgot to say: I like your flower, Paradise, albeit a tiny, first time bloomer - will be interesting to see the development as the plant (hopefully) gathers strength for further flowerings!

PS. In a recent post BrucherT made it clear, that he might be ready to go a long way to lay his hands on exactly the albinistic form of this species. Watch your back!

Kind regards,
Jens

Wow, what a nice and elegant flower. So far I had known this album variety of P. pupuratum only by the book of Olaf Gruß. And yes I agree to Jens because I also love both types, the 'normal coloured' ones and also the 'album' or 'aureum' ones. Both ones attract me, each one with its very special appeal.

"color bred out" you said!
Don't you remember in the movie "Gentlemen prefer blondes" Marilyn breathlessly said:
Its men like you who made me the way I am , and if you love me at all, you feel sorry for the terrible trouble I've been through, least have hold it against me , no no don't say another word.

Wow spectacular rare form of the purpuratum! I’m waiting for mine Dave (hint hint!)

And thanks Jen for pointing out that the albinistic versions of a coloured species has their unique charms. Just like blondes as Hien quoted the infamous lines.

I collected them for another reason. Because I can! LoL

Oh man you hit the jackpot! The only ones I’ve seen have been kinda lopsided. This flower is beautiful...would you mind divulging the source of the flask? Also, if you have others, and are parting, I would love to be on a list. I have 5 different P. purpuratum; it is my favorite species, embodying everything I love about Paphiopedilum. I do have one half-album from Sam Tsui now; he is trying to breed back his album that died. Thank you so much for sharing this beauty. Any pics of full plant? Thanks!

Lol lol lol lol I would go a long way for sure but my starving artist self probably couldn’t afford to get there! Heehee. But I know eventually I’ll get hold of one and nestle it into my burgeoning collection of P. purpuratum.

Hi Ray, I don’t mind album flowers but this species is the only one of which I’m really interested in having a nice, proportioned, robust album example of. Otherwise, I prefer “jungle”-type examples with intense coloration and wild form. Pretty much a species snob! But the hybrids I see here are often gorgeous too...I just don’t understand the efforts to “improve” upon species. The whole appeal to me is successfully growing a plant I might come upon in some remote jungle, which I will likely never visit, conserving its sacred genetics as a lowly steward. Which is nutty, I know. But that’s my thing.

Ray, I think you have answered yourself.
It is a matter of personal taste. Also, album is among the various color forms after all. :)
