Gary, do all the flowers on the spike have this? You'd have to reflower it to see if it's genetic or not. It wouldn't matter to me, I think it's cool.

It looks like the sepal will split on the next flower also. The point of the Dorsal sepal extends through the lower sepal causing the start of the split.
 
The the split ventrals genetic or cultural or... ?

The experts claim that it is a genetic "throw back" to a time with slipper orchids looked like most other orchids. That is, a whirl of 3 sepals on the outside, a whirl of 3 on the inside and a fused column (male/female).

If I've well understood, the 'abnormal' sepals are not a good thing....it's really a sin, 'cause i find this plant a real beauty, never seen before :drool:
