Paphiopedilums have fascinated several generations of horticulturists. Until 1980s, however, some paphiopedilums of Chinese origin, such as P. armeniacum, P. micranthum and P. malipoense, began to show their beauty and then became highly popular in the West. They had many times received the highest awards obtainable in the orchid world, and as a result the Chinese paphiopedilums have attracted worldwide attention since.
China is rich in Paphiopedilum resources, represented by 27 native species and many natural hybrids, as well as some infraspecific taxa, accounting for over one third of the total 79 species recognized in the genus. The present book is mainly a taxonomic treatment of Chinese species based mostly on living material. We began writing this book and making field observation of the native species some five years ago. Most of the Chinese species treated here have been observed in the wild. They are all provided with color photographs of the plants and their habitats in this book. As to the non-Chinese species, we also provide, in addition to an enumeration of them, each species with at least one color photograph and a brief description. In order to meet the need of foreign readers, all the taxonomic descriptions and discussions are written in both Chinese and English. In addition, the generic history, morphology, reproduction, ecology, geographical distribution, conservation, hybridization, cultivation, propagation, diseases and pests are also briefly introduced.
