Marco

Seeing yours planted in PA tempts me to try one. I may have to look into that. I keep admiring them on the forum but didn't think I could grow one because of the strange way they seem to be grown.

grandma m - yea they seem to like it. I have a standard white that I had purchase last year thats about to bloom again. :) When I water i just fill it to the top and them empty it right away and all the excess water just drips to the reservoir and they seem to be ok. water when almost dry and let them fully dry for about a day in the winter.

From what I remember reading, all of the leaf patternings on neos and other orchids(phals and dendros mainly) are caused by virus. So, I'm serious when I say be careful of spreading it. Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong or specify which virus it is that causes the varigation patterns?

This is the first (well second, Dale mentioned it at OSF this morning) time I've heard this. I emailed Jason Fischer about it as I do grow my Neos near my Mexipedium and don't want any trouble (not that I *have* any variegated Neos yet but they are on my growing list). Hopefully he'll reply and weigh in.

seriously??? i thought you were joking.....Heather please post reply whenever Jason responds

Okay, here's what Jason had to say:

Jason Fischer said:
Good god, I can't believe that rumor is still out there! They are NOT virused. Think of it like this:

There are such things as varieable bromeiliads (air plants) that have some growths that are variegated and some that are not. It all depends on the meristematic segment that develops (depending on the position the new growth emerges, some will come out green and some not). The same is true in many cases with neofinetia. But in all cases, it is genentic mutation that causes variegation, not virus.

Heather, are you talking about this thread on the OSF http://forum.theorchidsource.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=38;t=011179;p=1#000008

There was one thread a while back on the OSF where they were discussing it was virus due to ***I think*** the mosaic bean virus. It it's a rumor, that's great, but it seems many people believe it to be true. Also, there are several plant threads on google if you do a search on orchid virus varigated this thread comes up. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/botany/msg071123368824.html

I believe Jason over all these threads, but it seems to be a common misconception, then.

EDIT: Sorry for giving you a heart attack, Marco:> That's why I asked someone who knew for sure to comment, as I'm no neo specialist!

Thanks Candace - yes, that was the OSF thread I saw this morning, then when you mentioned it I was like "whaaa?" so, I thought I'd ask Jason directly.

I read that GW thread - interesting. It does make it sound as though, with regards to variegated neos (where all the growths tend to be variegated) that it is a genetic issue and not a viral issue (where maybe only one growth may be variegated).

Yay!

I've been trying to find the one thread in particular on the OSF where several growers talked about virus and varigation, but I haven't found it yet. It's going to bug me all day until I find it:evil:
