I am getting a little better with white flowers but still not there yet

Try using a gray card behind the flowers when you take a reading. Then move it away when you take the photo.

thanks Dot but this is not an SLR camera. It is an automatic. I used to use a gray card with my SLR film camera

Does it allow you to press the shutter button part-way to "lock in" the exposure? Many automatics do. Mine does, so that's how I can get a better exposure that just the auto setting alone.
