Can anyone make heads or tails out of this tag?

Paph (Makuli-Curtisii)-Maudiae x Paph Maudiae 'Napa Valley' HCC/AOS x sib.

I'm a bit stumped. I like the bloom though.

Paph[[ (Makuli X curtisii)XMaudiae] x Paph Maudiae 'Napa Valley'HCC/AOS] x sib
Paph (MakuliXCurtisii= great, great grandpaprents

Paph (Makuli-Curtisii)-Maudiae = great grandparents

Paph (Makuli-Curtisii)-Maudiae x Paph Maudiae 'Napa Valley' HCC/AOS = grandparents

Paph (Makuli-Curtisii)-Maudiae x Paph Maudiae 'Napa Valley' HCC/AOS x sib= parents

How's that?

I have one of the parents with the same confusing tag:rollhappy:

"Paph (Makuli-Curtisii)-Maudiae x Paph Maudiae 'Napa Valley' HCC/AOS x sib" should be written in this way:

Paph. ((Makuli x superbiens v. curtisii) x Maudiae) x (Paph. Maudiae "Napa Valley" HCC/AOS x Sibling)

Some of the Asian nurseries use a " - " instead of an " x " to indicate a cross.

I would read your label this way.

It's a Paph. That's the easy part! : )

Makuli was crossed with superbiens variety curtisii...
Then, one of the offspring was crossed with Maudiae....
Then, one of those offspring was crossed with Maudiae again. You can disregard the clonal name 'Napa Valley' and the "x sib" part. That information doesn't change anything related to the actual hybrid names.

So, the pod parent is (Makuli x superbiens v. curtisii) x Maudiae.
The pollen parent is Maudiae.

To simplify:

Makuli x curstisii (superbiens variety curtisii) = Paph. Memoria Allegria Gutierrez.

Memoria Allegria Gutierrez x Maudiae = Janet Kunkle

Janet Kunkle x Maudiae = Hsinying Majakun.

You've got Paph. Hsinying Majakun.....a very nice one, in fact! : )

Thanks for the input. I purchased it at a garden center and yes it did have a yellow computer tag. No info on what nusery it came from. They had about 15 of this particular cross and this one showed the most promise in color and form. I always wanted a green Maudiae and the price was right ($20). I'm just happy I have a dependable bloomer!

Lovely flower!!! Sometimes the fact that it is a gorgeous orchid is enough...:D

I got a couple of those with the same label that I salvaged from Lowe's. I think I paid a dollar for them. One of them is budding now also.

Thanks! Now why couldn't this have been put on the tag in the first place?

Kevin,
I've had this same cross (orginally from Hawaii) for 15 yrs, aleast 10yrs. with the same "yellow tag" Hera has. So these plants have been kicking a round for years. I have never bothered looking up any of the crosses but now that John has given me a name I will make a new tag:D
