I admit it -- I love dumpsterdiving. A sucker for a bargain. So that's why I was lurking around Lowe's this afternoon in the corner where all unsold orchids go to die. And there was a Paph. It had a couple of damaged leaves, but looked otherwise o.k. -- the leaves weren't shriveled and the new growth looked good. So against my better judgement I went for it, brought it home, unpotted it, and here's what I found:

Hahahaha, sucker!

So what do I do now? Yes, I realize pray (it is Easter, you know), but beyond that. Pot it up and see what happens? Keep it bare root and put it in a sealed plastic bag with some damp spaghnum? How do you save a slipper with only 2 puny roots??

Thanks, folks! :)

paph maudiae hybrids are quite vigorous.

I once broke the top off one by accident and the top portion developed new roots while the bottom portion developed new growth, so I have two plants! I planted the rootless one in sphag so that it would not dry out.

I am sure yours will live. I would probably just put it in a normal paph mix but with some moss around it.

I wish we had paphs in big box stores here...I'd go crazy for them, maybe even the dumpster... did it come with a name tag?

I know what you mean...last year I bought 6 Cymbidiums from Lowe's for $5 each. There was nothing wrong with them, they were just not in bloom.

Make sure you don't have any passenfers on the paph

Can you tell me what lowes you found this at? Or see if it has a vendor tag or item number? I work at lowes as the Live Nursery Sales Specialist and I have been trying to find vendors for paphs. I may be going through OL which is exciting.

What size where they? You got a good deal. Cymbidiums and Vanda don't last long on the clearance rack if they get there in my store. I buy them as soon as I clearence them. Already bought way to many phals, dend, and oncidiums. Now I just buy them and give them away to friends so I don't have to throw them if they sit to long.

It came from Lowes on Hwy 64 in Bartlett, TN. No vendor tag or SKU. It's the first time I've ever seen a slipper in Lowes or Home Depot.

The HD I go to in Union, NJ used to have paphs but I haven't seen any in a couple of years! I've sphag-n-bagged paphs w/ less roots that have made it! Good Luck.

Mark, I've had paphs worse than that make it. Usually I pot them in spag. Spagnum moss really kicks starts root growth. Baby it for a while in low light and if you've got any spare KLN or superthrive, have at it. If it doesn't make it, consider it an experiment.

The Lowes near us had named slippers recently as well, but pretty pricey.
