Since CITES complaints are a major part of discussions here (along with other orchid forums...) I wanted to mention that there was a fascinating article in the NY Times Magazine this weekend about how good intentions can go way in the opposite direction....specifically with the Endangered Species Act. In the same way that CITES has motivated smugglers to grab whatever they can, the ESP has inspired land owners to completely alter their land, like cutting down their forests, or stands of specific trees, in order to make their habitat completely unsuitable for species whose protection would interfere with their use of the land...the red cockaded woodpecker is a specific example they cite. Good article...but unsettling. Take care, Eric
