Found in Costa Rica - Orchid flasks for the masses

Hi all,

My wife and I visited Costa Rica for a week for some ecotourism and to get away from cold and dreary Maryland. A private orchid garden had these for sale as souvenirs:

And there were even some for sale at the airport:

I was surprised to see flasks being put into the hands of mere mortals, but I hope purchasers have good luck with them. They seemed (from what little I could tell) to be easy-to-grow kinds. I have no idea if they'd make it across the US border, despite the claims on the packaging.

In theory, being in vitro, so being artificially propagated and sterile by default, there should be no issues bringing them in, but who can say how things are interpreted and enforced.

I doubt that most "mere mortals" have the patience, even if they gain the know-how to raise them.

Sometimes the “mere mortals” buy them as souvenirs for us orchid growers. At least they’re more likely virus free than the orchids at the big box stores
