fairrieanum, calcarious or not?

Most of the documents I've come across associate fairrieanum with limestone.

The Pradham document associates the species with gneiss. If this is the case then fairrieanum would do better in somewhat acidic root conditions rather than basic.

Although mine are fairly prolific growers they seem to have allot of problems keeping lots of roots going (and this is a species I've kept in neutral/basic mediums over the years).

It may be time to get the oyster shell away from this one.
 
I never added any lime or oyster shell to my fairrieanums and they die anyway... Not a species I do well with. Love the hybrids, though.
