My Ctsm. Jumbo Eagle is flowering with all female flowers for the 2nd time this season. I much prefer the male form, so I'm planning on putting it in lower light for next year. It's growing in semi-hydro in the g.h. in high light.

This was the plant blooming with male flowers a few years ago.

more light = more energy = better able to carry seed = female flowers

That's my line of reasoning, anyway.

Yes, and if the plant is very healthy it's also more apt to throw female flowers. Plants that are in lower light or weaker/stressed tend to throw male flowers. I've actually had several bloomings where BOTH male and female flowers and occasionally a hermaphrodite, are on the same spike. Now, that looks bizarre. I've been told this is rare, but it seems to happen at least once every other year for me.

Very cool Candace.

I only have one Catesetum (laminatum and in bloom now too). This genus is very freaky with the unisex flowers.
