Hi All,

Now that our Summer Sale is over and the dust is beginning to settle, it's time to start thinking about the next big orchid event; the Chicagoland Orchid Festival, Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, 2009.

As usual, I will be publishing a list of Paph and Phrag Specials that will be uniquely Fox Valley's, but I wanted to take this opportunity to let those of you who regularly attend this event, that we will be having the folks from Ecuagenera as one of the guest growers located at Orchids By Hausermann. Ecuagenera are planning to bring the following adult Phrag species for sale: andreetae (!), besseae, boissierianum, caudatum var wallisii, hirtzii, longifolium and reticulatum. This will be a great opportunity for you slippertalkers out there to aquire some very nice species.

My friend, Dr. Wayne Hanson, will be representing Ecuagenera, along with Ms. Nicole Portilla. Wayne will be giving a talk at 10am on Saturday, Sept. 26 about his orchid adventures (and misadventures) since moving to Ecuador in 2007. Having been on some of these adventures with him and his wife Estee, I can promise you'll be rivetted to your seats!

Thanks!

I'll be attending with the Orchid Society of Minnesota. Who else will be there? Our schedule has us at Windsong on Friday afternoon, Natt's on Saturday morning, Oak Hill on Saturday afternoon, and Hauserman's on Sunday morning.

Great news, Eric! Looking forward to chatting with you. Will this be your first Chicagoland? Plan on spending the weekend if you intend to visit all the grower's greenhouses, and attend the presentations!

Ross, Ecuagenera and Fox Valley will be the only guest growers at Hausermann's this year, and Wayne Hanson's Saturday morning presentation is the only one scheduled. Orchid Inn (Sam Tsui) has a conflict and will be in Australia at that time (selling some of my flasks, hopefully) so he will not be here.

Dot - I would strongly suggest that those of you interested in andreetae order it directly from [email protected] for delivery in Chicago to avoid disappointment - I know he doesn't have many.

Thanks!

Although I've been to Hauserman's I've always missed Chicagoland, so this will be my first. I already have a flask of andreetae being grown but I might get another plant, unfortunately there is no price for them on the website. :(

Hi Eric,

The andreetaes don't seem especially hard to grow out of flask, so you should do well with them. As far as pricing for the adults, I think the best thing to do is email Pepe at [email protected], and deal with him directly. I will also have Wayne look into it. FYI, I was just informed that the last date for pre-orders from Ecuagenera for pickup at the Chicagoland Festival is September 7, 2009.

Thanks, Tom

Hi Dot,

Maybe not a few years; we have about ten seedlings in a compot that might be ready for individual pots around the time of the Troy show next spring.

Eric - "pleuros and others" ?

I looked at the festival website today. There are 2 lectures at the same time at different locations I want to be at! Has anyone made it to all the vendors in one day? I need a local guide to help me navigate, I deff want to go to Hauserman and Oak Hill, and Cyp Haven is the guest at Windsong!!! Argh! :sob:

Yes, I've done all stops in one day. Doable if you start early and don't doddle. What day are you coming NYEric? Would love to escort you around- not sure if my boy would enjoy it though. Let's see...

I've been to every Chicagoland Orchid Festival the past six years and I still have no idea what roads we take or anything! It's the real upside of having a good bus driver, even though some flexibility is lost. Lenny has been driving the lead bus for the OSM since before I was a member. He's a great driver, and a lot of fun. He likes our group and kids with the regular passengers. I guess we're one of the easier groups he does. He even buys an in bloom orchid for his wife each year.

I did it in one day & didn't enjoy it, it was too rushed & as usual too much road construction! Much better if you can do 2 days!
