My son, Aksel, won this plant in a tombola at an orchid show a couple of years ago. It's been a reliable bloomer ever since.

It came without a name tag, so I'm completely at a loss about the grex. Does anybody dare to offer a conjecture, no matter how speculative ('Ray', I know!;)) this entreprise might be?

Tombola is strictly British English, though we have the same word in German too..

It's the same word in danish, too, and used in daily language.
I don't know whether the word nowadays for brits have a slightly archaic tone, belonging to a world of country fetes, church bazaars, or perhaps Midsomer Murders? ;)

We use it still. It is often associated with school fêtes and other smaller charitable events rather than more commercial or larger events where raffle would be more commonly used.

In Belgiumthe act of selling tickets by an association or a club with a financial interest is also called a tombola. Not all tickets are generally winners ....
