    Calcium Nitrate Question

Ray thanks! I wish I would have known (remembered at least to look) that you had it before I ordered that pound. Alas, it won't last and I'll remember next time that you have it. Thanks again for the ratio - just what I needed.

    Calcium Nitrate Question

Okay, I have found one pound with free shipping. Q. Does someone know how much loose CHC (it is not compressed) that will treat in cation exchange/soaking? PS: It came from Roberts Flower Supply

    Calcium Nitrate Question

Yes, or just sell a small enough quantity to soak my CHC!

    Calcium Nitrate Question

Yes, it is available online for 7.95 for 5# -- only shipping is 12.95. That was why I was seeking the smaller quantities on ebay. The closest hydroponic store is in the next state.:( Their shipping price is the same.

    Calcium Nitrate Question

After learning a great deal from the CHC thread, now I need to find calcium nitrate for the soak. I have epsom salt already. Question(s): Does it matter if it is "ammonium calcium nitrate" or should it be "calcium nitrate tetrahydrate"? I ask because needing only a small quantity...

Yes, I Want To Know About CHC

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. It has proven extremely helpful. And fortifies my belief that this is the best place to get tried and true usable information. Best regards,

Right. I'm getting a good picture. One point Earnie brings up that is pertinent is with regard to fertilizing. If you are not repotting often, for whatever reason, are you getting build-up? (That sort of applies anywhere.)

Where to get the calcium nitrate? The MgSO4 is easy enough.

Yes, I Want To Know About CHC

I went to the Roberts Flower Supply site and it has several options for chc. I am assuming (not always safe without asking) that it is straight chunk either bagged or a bale? I ask because I saw a compressed brick offered, but it was the coir (peat-type) and chunk mixed. As for...

Do you notice salt build-up with it? Does anyone using the washed type notice a build-up? In how much time?

Great information! I know about MgSO4 (epsom's) but where do you get calcium nitrate? What are the concentrations for a 5 gallon bucket? Todd, thanks for the opinion. I'll get the chunk from Crystal. Any way to order online or do you have to call?

    Does anyone use Repotme.com?

Also, one more question: Is it important to get it from Crystal Company or could another orchid supplier be okay? I would ask about the name of the business but not sure if it is okay on the forum. (?)

It seems very logical to me that if so many people have not had loss or damage from salt build-up that it is more than reasonable to use it. I want to use it. I like it. On some thread I found searching archives I saw something about soaking it in calcium or something. Does anyone do...

Yes, I Want To Know About CHC

Thanks for the replies. Earnie, I am in Alabama. The reason(s) I wanted to use it - the medium size just looks so chunky, like it would have air space and bark breaks down. I use orchid type mixes for other epiphytic plants as well. I have one hoya in a pot of loosely added medium size...

Yes, I Want To Know About CHC

I searched CHC and did not return any results, so I put in coconut husk chips and got a few threads that I looked through. Is there an overall consensus? Can I grow epiphytic plants in say the medium CHC? I do know to get the triple washed type (like Crystal bales). I was blasted on...

    Favorite or hated s/h medium?

Thank you all for your kind welcome! I use a couple of types of the LECA and I don't really have a preference. I have heard that it could really matter - but I just haven't experienced it. Some of mine is still separate, some is mixed together. Again, I can't see a difference. I guess...

    Favorite or hated s/h medium?

One thing I use that may not be considered by most as s/h is top grade sphagnum. I put it in the clay orchid pots that have holes for phals and many of my rare ferns. These pots are displayed and when the medium is dry(ing) I put a saucer of water underneath until it is as moist as...

Can you post which s/h medium you like and maybe why? Any you don't like, or outright hate? Why? Sunshine
