Phrag. Eric Young 'Yellow Bird' (besseae fma flavum x longifolium fma album) )

I n bloom this morning in a sunny greenhouse at Hausermann's. The pouch color is very pale rose; hard to see in natural light.

    Happy Independence Day, 2022!

Hope everyone has a safe and healthy Holiday. Hug your kids, dogs and all the rest of your significant others.

Phrag. Cuzco Blood 'Twin Sisters' AM/AOS (Mem. Dick Clements x humboldtii)

In bloom this morning in a shady greenhouse. This is one of our favorite semi-long petalled red Phrag. Hybrids, and we will be breeding it back to one of our humboldtii to darken the color and lengthen the petals.

Phrag. besseae fma flavum 'D'Oro' 4N

Without a doubt, our best flavum Phrag. besseae, in bloom this morning in a sunny greenhouse.

    Phrag. Hanne Popow 'Ghost'

This is Phrag. Hanne Popow (besseae fma flavum 'Green Gold' HCC/AOS x schlimii 'Cali') in bloom today. It's pale to be sure, but we were hoping for something closer to white. Pretty, non-the-less but awfully hard to capture the true color with my iPhone camera.
  6. tomkalina

    Phrag. caricinum 'Fox Valley'

In bloom this morning in a sunny greenhouse, this compact growing, water-loving species is a native of Peru and Bolivia.
  7. tomkalina

    Phrag. Praying Mantis 'Birchwood'

In bloom this morning, this is originally from the Clement's Collection. I know green flowers don't excite a lot of people but I love the subtlety.
  8. tomkalina

Phrag, Fox Valley Fireball 'Birchwood' AM/AOS

In bloom this morning in a bright greenhouse, this is one of the early awards to this grex, but still nice to see in bloom this time of year.
  9. tomkalina

    Phrag. d'alessandroi tray

This species lends itself perfectly to tray culture.
  10. tomkalina

    Phrag. pearcei 'Birchwood' HCC/AOS

Awarded in 1988, this little gem continues to reward us every summer with a beautiful display of flowers. Photographed this morning in a sunny greenhouse, this species is perfect for the Phrag. lover with limited space.

    Phrag. Eric Young 'Yellow Bird'

Made with the flavum form of Phrag. besseae, the summer flowers are almost white.

    Paph. lowii 'Horizontalis'

Purchased from Taylor Orchids during the 1999 MOS show, the provenance of this plant remains a mystery to me. It is not like any other Paph. lowii I've seen; too large a flower (15 cm HNS) to be Paph. richardianum, and I can't imagine the parentage if it's a hybrid. Pretty sure Orchids Ltd. has...

    Magic Lantern 'Fox Valley' AM/AOS

In bloom in a sunny greenhouse, so the colors are pretty washed out; this clone is one of our most reliable bloomers.

    Chicagoland Orchid Fest - 2021!

The 2021 Chicagoland Orchid Festival is scheduled to be held the weekend of September 24- 26, 2021, and Fox Valley Orchids, Ltd. will once again have a sales table at the Orchids By Hausermann greenhouses in Villa Park, IL. Scheduled hours will be available as we get closer to the event. The...

Paph. Magic Lantern (delenatii x micranthum)

In bloom today in a sunny greenhouse. One of the early parvi hybrids and fairly easy to grow.
  16. tomkalina

Phrag. Sunspot (Waunakee Sunset x schlimii)

In bloom this morning in a sunny greenhouse, this first bloom seedling has pale yellow petals - a color that's hard to capture with this camera.
  17. tomkalina

    Paph. sukhakulii 'York' AM/AOS

This small division (1-1-0) is blooming this morning in a sunny greenhouse. The single flower is approximately 10% smaller in HNS and PW than when awarded by the AOS in 1993, bit still fairly competitive by today's standards.
  18. tomkalina

    Sanguinaria canadensis (Double bloodroot)

A sure sign of spring, and a gift from our friend Dot Barnett years ago at one of the Michigan Orchid Society Palm Sunday orchid shows. Miss that show and miss our friends at the MOS.

Phrag. Summer Sun 'Fox Valley' AM/AOS

(Eric Young x Waunakee Sunset) - In bloom this morning in a bright greenhouse, this is one of our most reliable bloomers. Both parents had Phrag. besseae fma flavum in their backgrounds and the AOS awards description described the overall flower color as "yellow, overlaid coral".

    Phrag. fischeri 'Purple Plum'

This year's rendition of our darkest Phrag. fischeri clone.
