    Lycaste in semi-hydroponics

Hello, As anyone here grown Lycaste in semi-hydroponics? I am in the throws of repotting into lava rock but have a lone Lycaste which I am dubious of repotting into the lava rock as it requires a drier rest for flowering. I suppose an alternative is to instead of potting into a semi-hydro pot...

interesting Youtube video: water retention and wicking of different mediums

Hello all, If you have 30 minutes to kill, this is interesting: For those without 30 minutes to kill this is what got my attention. 1. Regardless of the medium over the course of a week all the mediums lost about the same amount of water due to evaporation. This could imply that regardless...

    Encyclia Renate Schmidt

I purchased some Catts from SVO in the spring and Fred included a free Encyclia Renate Schmidt. It is now blooming and looks good. The plant is very compact which I like and the flowers have nice fragrance. I don't think this is something I would have purchased by choice -- given budget...

Paph In-Charm Topaz x Payakka Kodkod

Hello, So, a journey of a new cross begins. Last year Duck Slipper gave me some pollen of his Paph. concolor ‘Yellow Bird’ x thaianum ‘Perfecto’ to put on my InCharm Topaz (Lisa x Davelle) : The pod matured and the seed sown (B138 terrestrial orchid medium from ajorchids on Ebay) but...

    Paph. Hsinying Alien "Elvis"

It isn't the best looking of its kind but it flowers every year and the people who complement it don't know any better. (I had to blur out the background else my wife would have been very upset for you having to see the aftermath of my four kids having rampaged through the living room.) So why...

Are there mini/compact white Cattleya hybrids?

The flurry of Catt photos has got me curious: are there white mini-Catt or compact-Catt hybrids? I am aware of mini alba types of loddigesii and walkeri but no little white Catt hybrids that look like Cow Bells, Bob Betts etc... Are there any? If not, why has no one bothered to try create...

    Adam Hauserman x Winston Churchill

I got this from Hauserman's a while back. This is its first flowering. It is big and cupped but the color is nice. The pouch is deformed but the dorsal seal is very flat. I hope for a better flowering next year. Merry Christmas

    Ansellia africana

Hello, My Ansellia is in flower: Not the most amazing example of the species but the fragrance is very pleasant... and I thought I would also show you how I grow it: So the plant is potted in Orchiata bark mix from Orchids.com inside a basket. A while back I decided to suspend the basket over...

    green pod maturation times

Hello, Does anyone know how long a complex-bulldog type Paph seed pod takes to mature? I have a InCharm-Topaz that was pollinated back in March. Do you think it would be ready to harvest already? Thanks

orchids, CITES and the Lacey Act

Hello, I have question regarding how the orchid hobby intersects with CITES and the Lacey Act. All paphs are CITES protected and so considered endangered. Under the Lacey Act there can be no trade in endangered species... CITES permits enable international trade but how does it work...

Paph In-Charm Topaz (Lisa x Davelle)

First flowering. Photo without flash, using natural sunlight. Not a tea-cup Paph but pleasing all the same. The plant is quite compact making it easier to care for and display. There are definitely two plants in the pot as there is another flower coming and it is smaller than this one, so I...

    Phrag. Fox Valley Fireball

Hello, Some cheer that recently bloomed in my home: This one was from Little Frog Farm, I got it about 3 years ago. It languished while I was in Iowa but since moving to TN it has perked up and rewarded me with such a lovely flower. The flower has gotten a bit brighter since opening but...

    Paph Seagrove Spice Girl

Hello, Well, the long Paph drought is finally over. This is the first Paph I have bloomed since 2013 on growths grown under my care. I got this plant off Ebay in bloom (photo right at the end). It nearly died twice while trying to grow Paphs in Iowa and has now finally recovered to the point...

    Neofinetia on my office windowsill

Hello, my Neofinetia is behaving well this year. I got it from Hauserman's some years ago and had only ever produced a single spike. This year it has given me 8 spikes! I don't know what has brought on this floriferousness but hope it has something to do with its new home on my office...

    Orchids of the Inca Trail

Hello, My wife* found this page of orchids seen along the Inca Trail: http://www.incatrailperu.com/inca_trail_orchids.html Some I recognize some some I don't. I am most intrigued by the little yellow slipper orchid shown. The leaf shape doesn't look right for Cyp. calceolus (see...
