    Phrag andreettae Round 2!

Bloomed for the first time about 2 years ago. Took a year off of flowering, but has been growing pretty aggressively. Throwing out two new growths every year. First flowering pictures: https://www.slippertalk.com/threads/phragmipedium-andreettae.46163/ Unfortunately, I missed the first couple...

    Phrag Jason Fischer (3N)

Picked this one up from Woodstream last year. It has grown well since and this is it's first blooming. Overall, I am really pleased. It's hard to capture, but it is a really nice deep shade of red (despite it not even being all that cool down in the basement right now). It is also quite flat! It...

    Alternative timers for MistKing systems?

Quick question for anyone out there familiar with misting systems - anybody know if there are alternative timers that are compatible with MistKing misting systems? I have had a MistKing system for about 5 years now and have been pretty happy with the pump and nozzles, but was never really happy...

    Mexipedium xerophyticum

Got this little guy a couple years ago as a single growth. Tiny little bit of a plant that never really got terribly much bigger; but quickly started putting out new growths. It is now four growths and this is it's first flowering. Took me a bit by surprise as I wouldn't have thought this was...

    Apropos comic...

Was catching up on my webcomics this morning and ran across this one. Hilarious! (original at http://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/death-5)

    Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens

A pleasant surprise when hiking in Shenandoah National Park :)

Cypripedium acaule - watch with me

Last year, shortly after moving into my new apartment, I was taking a walk in the woods behind the complex and stumbled across a nice little population of Cypripedium acaule. Conveniently only about a 10 minute hike out. Unfortunately, this was midsummer, so they were already bloomed out for the...

    New acquisition - Phrag kovachii!

Well... finally took the plunge! Found a pretty nice deal on a Phrag kovachii at Orchid Trail this weekend. Was driving down to Raleigh for the wife's birthday and decided to make a quick stop. It is 5 total growths, probably two separate plants, in a four inch pot. One of the plants looks to...

Dealing with molg growth in compots. Thoughts?

About 2 months ago, I made 3 compots from a flask of Phrag sargentianum from Woodstream. They have been doing quite well so far, all still alive, and pretty much all have put out 2-3 new leaves since being deflasked. There was one compot that was yellowing a bit out of flask, but I have a...

    Freeeeeedoooooom!

Every time I pull this guy out to water, I keep wondering when I am going to accidentally break this off... it just keeps on goin'. About 14 inches outside of the pot now. :P

    Well this is bold...

To my knowledge, Paph rungsuriyanum is still very much illegal in the US... and yet here is someone blatantly selling one (from within the US) on EBay... a very ballsy move. If they know enough to know what they've got and how to grow it, I have to assume they also know that it is illegal...

I feel like he's trying to tell me something...

My cat (Yuri) was annoyed that I didn't seem to be getting the hint that he wanted breakfast this morning. After several failed attempts to get my attention, this is how I found him in the living room... :P (Yes, those are his actual food cans that he removed from the box and rolled out...

    YAPL (Yet Another Paph Lowii)

First blooming for this one. Just started opening. I will post another pic when all the flowers have opened. I am quite pleased with it though! :)

    Paph superbiens

Always a favorite. The size of the flowers on these (in general) never fails to dazzle me. This is the first time this particular plant has bloomed for me. Also, I really like the unique leaves on this one. Not to mention the pouch is super-dark.

    Paph micranthum in low bud

Finally. After about 5 years, I must have finally (by accident) hit the right conditions last winter. The plant has been growing like crazy and now the 4 largest growths are all showing signs of budding! They are moving VERY slowly though. I dunno if this is typical of micranthum or if...

    Should I keep it...?

So, the first flower on my Phrag andreettae dropped about 2 weeks ago. Normally, I wait for the ovary to shrivel and loosen up on its own, then knock it off to keep the spikes clean. However, this time it appears to be swelling, so I think my andreettae may have self pollinated somehow? I am not...

Drier growing phrags - how dry is dry?

Quick newbie question. Up until now I have only cultivated the "wetter" growing phrag species (and all are doing quite well). I have always loved Phrag caudatum though and am thinking about adding one to my collection. I know it's considered to be one of the phrags that likes it drier, but I am...

    Phragmipedium andreettae!

My Phrag andreettae decided to bloom! I've been watching the first bud slowly develop for the past couple weeks and was itching to share my excitement, but didn't want to jinx it since I have been looking forward to it. The past couple days it finally, slowly, opened . It is also pushing a...

Recirculating water table for phrag culture

I decided to start the new year off by realizing an idea that I have been sitting on for quite some time. With the move to a new (larger) growing space, I now finally have the room (and the time) to do this - a recirculating water table for my phrags! This idea is based off something I saw on...
