    An “orchidarium” experiment

I did muck around a bit more and did get a working integrated solution that involves using an app called Blynk to interface the phone with the arduino to control the outputs remotely. There is a lot of "black magic" going on behind the scenes and this means you can only use supported hardware. I...

    An “orchidarium” experiment

Ozpaph, I suppose one of the easiest ways to set this up would be with an internet connected switch similar to the these. This would allow you to use an app to turn fans or lights or whatever on/off remotely. I have enough parts laying around to mock up something similar but arduino based but...

    An “orchidarium” experiment

I do not have that capability, though I did think about having manual overrides. The exhaust fan will automatically come on anytime the temperature inside rises above 81F so my hope is that I shouldn’t have those unexpected temperature rises.

    An “orchidarium” experiment

The setup is shown below. It is still a bit in prototype phase so don't mind the breadboard and jumper wires. The arduino is connected to an Si7021 temp/humidity sensor and DS3231 real time clock. In case you are interested, they are both I2C devices so they share the same pins on the arduino...

    Wild Cyps May 2018

It is almost frustrating how well these native orchids grow! Every year about this time we wander out into the woods and are treated to a show from these slippers. No need to worry about what type of water to use and how much fertilizer and if they are getting enough light and worry about crown...

    An “orchidarium” experiment

Sorry, that title should have read - An "orchidarium" experiment. I'm not sure why it put all those characters in there... I recently picked up my first mounted orchid, Aerangis fastuosa, and a small Angraecum didieri in a basket. These two small orchids rapidly dry out in my house and I lost a...

    Cypripedium Seed Pod

Thanks for the replies. I live in Connecticut and the last published list from DEEP shows cyp. arietinum, parviorum, and reginae only. I, of course, do not want to do anything that is going to threaten the plants. I was wondering along the lines of flasking the seed. I think I remember reading...

    Cypripedium Seed Pod

Maybe I should have posted this under the conservation heading, please move it if that is the case, but here is the situation. We are lucky enough to have a healthy cluster of cyp. acaule on our property. Cypripedium by jkarlbarlow, on Flickr There are close to 20 blooming size plants and more...

    Paphiopedilum Lynleigh Koopowitz

Thanks for the insight! Mrhappyrotter, if you get your face right in there, there is a mild sweet fragrance.

    Paphiopedilum Lynleigh Koopowitz

Hopefully I am doing this correctly. I haven't tried posting photos before. I picked up this plant just before it began to spike earlier this year. Flower seems decent but the leaves look more upright that those in many of the other pictures I've seen. Is this normal? Either way, we're enjoying...

Hi from the Quiet Corner of Connecticut

Been lurking for a while and learning quite a lot. My current collection is very small compared to many of you, a vanda (neo) hybrid and a paph. Lynleigh Koopowitz. We have some wild native orchids (cypripedium) within walking distance. Also growing a couple carnivorous plants with the kids. I...
