    Cyps in pots 2017

Hi David - what a lovely collection of cyps in pots - I also grow mine all outdoors in pots and with no protection. I bought some terrestial orchid compost from Laneside Orchids which was really costly for repotting them - may I ask what your mix is and do you mix your own? I also fertilize mine...

    Bud blast on roth?

The flower stalk is extending but really slowly - I have a phillipinense which already has a stalk about 3 times the length -- are roths typically so slow in developing their buds and flower stalks?

Lining the tops of pots with live sphagnum

Thanks for the advice. I have loosely draped the top 1cm of the top with the live sphagnum and after 2 weeks the number of new roots coming out of the barerooted plants was surprising.....the rest of the pot is just with bark, large perlite and charcoal.

    Bud blast on roth?

Hi there, about 2 weeks ago I noticed that there was a tight sheath in the axils of my roth which was the beginnings of the flower stalk. About 2 weeks later now and the sheath has pushed up a bit but its still not elongating very much? I heard that it takes up to 6 weeks for a roth to flower...

    Kelpmax versus Maxicrop

Hi Ed, thanks for the input. I dont have an enormous collection and I found Kelpak to be very expensive at £78 for 5 litres of which it would take me an eternity to finish using it. Do you just use the normal Maxicrop seaweed or the Maxicrop triple or other variants and what is the typical...

How deep do we pot the rhizome of the plant?

Oh thanks for the fact about the nodes. What about for multifloral paphs or paphs in general?

How deep do we pot the rhizome of the plant?

Hi, am busy repotting some newly acquired barerooted multiflorals and wondering if I should expose the rhizome above the potting material (worried about rots) or should it be just below? Or should I just top dress it with sphag to cover the rhizome like what is commonly done for phrags? Any...

2 different color variety of sanderianum

Wow that is nice. Wish I was still living in Singapore and not having to worry about the low humidity for my paphs. Did you get them from Sarawak or you grew from flask? When I grew them in Singapore they were so much slower growing than the stonei which was like a monster plant.....

    Kelpmax versus Maxicrop

Hi I have heard great things about what Kelpmax does but as it is not available in the UK, is Maxicrop seaweed extract a good alternative for paphs? I have used it on my garden plants before but never on my orchids. Care to shed your experience with it?

To use Epsom salts or not?

Hi Gary, thats good to know. I soaked my bark mix in a solution of Greenfuse Root solution and also incorporate into my watering to have promote rooting. I have not used Orchiata as I have read on varying success with it on many threads and especially with Sam who has veered away from it and I...

Lining the tops of pots with live sphagnum

Thanks for all the advice. I have already increased the humidity of the surrounding and was just wondering in the interim period of using a topping of sphag on the top (not packed but just put as a thin layer on top of my existing bark mix). The reason why I ask was that numerous threads have...

Lining the tops of pots with live sphagnum

I have just repotted some newly acquired roths and the older leaves are showing some signs of yellowing which I was told was normal as a consequence of the bare rooting process. I have read many previous posts about the benefits of live sphagnum on promoting root (but not top growth) and was...

To use Epsom salts or not?

Hi, I was advised by Sam to water with Epsom salts (1 teaspoon to 4 litres of water) every few weeks as some of the new plants I have obtained are showing some signs of very light yellowing (the older leaves only) and at the very tip of the older leaves a slight browning. My water quality...

    Growing paphs in low humidity

Thanks for all the advice. I am misting the plants with good air movement several times a day. I was also thinking of putting live sphagnum moss just as a top dressing of the pots and mist it frequently to keep the humidity high - is that feasible?

New plants and flasks from Sam

Yup, Sam told me that sometimes when a plant is bare rooted the stress response induces the differentiation of a flower bud instead and he has also likewise advised that I should leave just one bud to see how flowers look like and then snip it off after it fully opens so that the young plant can...

New plants and flasks from Sam

The cross is Paph. rothschildianum x sib (Miles x Perfection FCC/AOS, G/JOGA). Do roths flower so small and young?

New plants and flasks from Sam

Its in flower! Looks like I did not have to wait too long, the NBS cross from Sam I got on Monday is now producing a flower bud. And its only in a 9cm pot with leaf span of 15 inches across. Keeping my fingers crossed it will not blast as it has been repotted from the transit from the U.S.

    Growing paphs in low humidity

Hi, I tend to grow most of my paphs in my home where the humidity fluccuates from 30 to 45% at most. Has anyone had any experience with coping with lower humidity in the home and still grown their multiflorals successfully? Mine are windowsill grown and receive no supplementary lighting and the...
