Experiment: Comparing Breeding Characteristics of niveum and thaianum

About 8 months ago, I took advantage of double spikes on one of my compact maudiaes, pollinating one with niveum and the other with thaianum. Hopefully both crosses produce viable seed and I can get a direct comparison of the effects of the two on the same plant. Initially, because of the...

For Sale Bulbophyllum purpureorhachis For Sale

I asked Julie to make a few cuttings of Bulbophyllums, and the next thing I know, she's hacking apart the Bulbophyllum purpureorhachis! We have 5 divisions, all with a lead growth. Because of the larger size, we will ship bare root with a bit of moist moss. We have grown and bloomed it...

Use for Paph King Goldemar '6-23'

This one has nice form, but the "muddy" dorsal would most likely preclude any awards when compared to previous cultivars of the same cross. However, I think that this plant when combined with niveum, thaianum, or Nathaniel's Clarity (niveum x thaianum) has the potential to yield some nice pinks...

    A pair of thaianums

While not the greatest form, Paph thaianum 'Tiny Tot' has bloomed twice while maintaining a 3 inch (7.5 cm) leaf span. The other is a first time bloomer.

Paph Doll's Kobold ('FV #1' x 'RIP Mokey'), F2 Generation

I'm not sure if I posted these before. I made an F2 generation cross back in 2010, using my best Doll's Kobold as the seed parent and using pollen from Bob in Albany. The best came out with more red in the dorsal.

Paph King Goldemar (Doll's Kobold X Little by Little)

One of my favorite things about hybrids is the variation one can get from a cross.

    Member Reintroduction

I have been off Slippertalk for the past few years, lurking and reading some of the threads, so I thought I'd introduce myself to the newer members. My name is Ross Hella and my wife and I are owners of Deerwood Orchids. We specialize in breeding compact/miniature Paphiopedilums.

    Paph Lady Clunas 'Whatcroft Hall'

Registered in 1945, its parents are Gertrude West X delenatii. Paph Gertrude West has 71 other offspring and 3,908 progeny. Interestingly, Lady Clunas has no offspring, indicating that it is most likely a triploid. Still a very beautiful and unusual flower.

    Paph Todd Eckel 'Angels Call'

Todd Eckel was an orchid enthusiast suffering from multiple auto immune conditions. I met him a couple summers ago and named this orchid for him. Just as this particular flower was starting to open last week, Todd passed away. His funeral service is tomorrow. Paph Todd Eckel = (Barbi-Doll X...

    Paph Harvest Light 'Potbelly'

Got this one from Arnold Klehm. I chose it for its flower shape and compact growth habit: tip to tip leaf span is just under 12 inches.
