    Orchid nurseries/shows in Bay Area

I would recommend visiting Hawk Hill and Hanging Gardens. The two businesses are close together in Pacifica. These are both small businesses operated by John Leathers and Bob Hamilton (HH), and Dan Newman (HG). Both collections are amazing in their variety. e.g. HH has plants of Masd...

    Dendrobium vexillarius

I wanted to give a plug for Dan Newman/Hanging Gardens. http://hanginggardens.org/en/ I have seen good plants of all color varieties of this species at his greenhouse. Dan really has an amazing collection of cool growing rare species. JC

    kovachii "Bogotano"

Color still looks very nice albeit a little lighter. I've found that small kovachii plants after flowering can crash, so I would cut the spike and grow it up. I would use the pollen as the quality is sufficient. That anguloi looks really nice too. JC

    kovachii "Bogotano"

I think this one looks quite excellent. Full form, quite flat, dark color, excellent pouch color. My only minor criticism is the slight folding back on the petal bases. On a larger plant it should bloom better and may have somewhat better form. Flower quality also depends on flowering...

    OZ flask list including kovachii

Here is a so so pic of the FCC from Dave S/Paph Paradise page. Second and third links are another OZ roth that Dave acquired. Got an 85 pt AM a year ago. Dave and I felt that score was low. [I am not a judge, but Dave is one of the best] Shows that judging quality on the net depends very...

They're coming. BTW, Dave Sorokowsky won another FCC/AOS for a roth over the weekend. JC

    OZ flask list including kovachii

You are correct on the names. I guess I screwed up when I posted before. And yes, sometimes I refer to Big Boy as Big Guy.....but always big. :) It even bloomed better this year at least by my eye -- see FB below. So maybe Fat Boy. Sorry, they don't all have clonal names. One of the...

    OZ flask list including kovachii

orders: [email protected] We have a new batch of flasks. One highlight is that we now have seedlings of kovachii "Leonardo Andre" FCC/AOS X self for sale. kovachii in flask are tricky, and we have expended quite a bit of effort to make this successful. One note: I suspect that the...

    Tokyo Dome Pictures

Didn't bring anything home. It's always tricky so decided to bypass the stress this year. JC

    Tokyo Dome Pictures

I sold but we don't enter plants. It is a nine day show so I would have to pick them up at the end. Can't stay that long.

roths started spiking late this year according to TON. So not much. We find this also. Every year the spiking begins at a different time within about a 6 week window. JC

For those interested, I've posted a bunch of photos from the Tokyo Dome show on the Facebook page of The Orchid Zone. They are in no particular order. Paphs are towards the end. https://www.facebook.com/pg/theorchidzone/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1392053837512004

    jackii

Same experience. Flowered some that have very light stippling in the center of the pouch. JC

    Manzur La Aldea flavum.

That's really a pleasing outcome. There used to be lots of crosses of this sort around. Not so common these days. JC

    April Fool 'Surprise'

Ploidy, I don't know. The horns are not typical. One nice thing about this clone is that the color varies quite a bit from one blooming cycle to the next. Quite temperature and culturally sensitive. We've sold quite a number of divisions of this one, so I am sure other members have it as...
