    Cypripedium macranthos f. rebunense

Last week my wife and I got to visit Rebun Island, northernmost of Japan's islands and home to C. macranthos f. rebunense. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the wild colony because the flowers had passed, and it is strictly controlled so I couldn't gain access legally. I did get a couple...

    Dendrobium loddigesii

This little guy flowers religiously this time of year. I'm not complaining! Found up to 1500 meters elevation, I almost want to try this one outside, but recent winters have me thinking better of it.

Paph. armeniacum - finally a successful flowering

Been growing this plant for over 10 years now. Finally it is flowering well. The last flower just opened - about two weeks later than the other two, and a little on the small side. I wonder how long it will stay in good flower. Maybe just a week or two. All in all, I'm quite pleased.

    Monkey Business

Woke up to something banging around on the roof. I was surprised to find a monkey up there! He started coming towards me quickly, so I didn't hang around!

    Pretty in Hot Pink

I've been growing this plant since 2005. Nearly lost it a few years back due to extreme neglect, but it proved to be surprisingly resilient. It came with the label, H. militaris x H. erichmichelli, so I'm calling it H. rhodochelia x H. erichmichelli. Certainly a shocking splash of color.

    Cattleya purpurata werkhauseri

Compared to the beauties shown by many of you recently, it is with a tinge of embarrassment that I show my little plant in flower now. Lovely thing IMO.

    Video: Late Flowering Dendrobium moniliforme

This is a fairly large clump of a typical "white flowered" D. moniliforme in the garden now. This plant was given to me by a friend who bought a house with a large colony. He cut one branch of the tree they grow in and gave it to me.

    Phaius flavus f. maculatus

This is the white flowered form of the species, which is typically yellow. A native of Japan, but endangered across its range. Pretty easy to grow if you remember to repot it! Given to rots, just like other's in the genus (ditto Calanthe). The name 'maculatus' is in reference to the white...

You can't always get what you want

Well, after years of waiting, my P. armeniacum has finally opened... with less than stellar results. I grow the plant outside year round, so it is fully acclimated to that environment. I was excited to see two sheaths this spring, and since the buds seemed to be developing well, I simply left...

    Dendrochilum wenzelii

My little plant is flowering well this year. I think the trick is to give it plenty of light and keep it slightly dry in winter.

    Anticipation is making me wait

    P. armeniacum is finally going to flower...well, let's hope those buds don't blast, or get eaten! The second shot is of a plant that flowered for me around 20 years ago. I was silly enough to track it's opening and made a composite photo. Too bad it didn't have better form.

    Malipoense is in bloom again

Don't seem to have much trouble flowering this species. I have resisted growing it outside year round since winter here is just a little too severe, and probably would effect its flowering since it begins spiking right around Christmas. So I keep it in an unheated "poly house" inside where...

    Miltonia spectabilis v. moreliana

Grew this from 2 small divisions my wife bought at a plant sale. I was not sure they would do well in the hot climate here, but I guess it is happy! Not cold hardy in my area so it comes in for the winter months.

    Cymbidium macrorhizon

Odd little leafless Cymbidium that gets its nutrition from mycorrhizal fungi (obligate mycoheterotroph). The pic and vid were taken with an iphone in dark conditions, hence the poor quality.

    Neofinetia out my backdoor

Thought I'd give the video feature a try. Actually they are out my front door. It's still the monsoon season. Taken with iphone, hence the limited quality.

    Ho Chi Min

Here is mine flowering now. The flower on the left is newly open when it is more compact and flat. A couple days later it becomes fuller looking, but also gets a bit dog-eared. Flowers typically last a couple weeks.

    Nishidemiyako

Not as clean as Marco's plant, but here's two plants I've been growing for a while now. The first started as a single, small fan. The second one has a couple 'Manazuru' coming along. I once was googoo gaagaa about 'Manazuru'. A local nursery used to have a cool 'Manazuru' type 'Tamanishiki'...

    A minor miracle?

Growing a Cyp, let alone flowering one after 10 years of growing it without a bloom, in a climate similar to Charleston, South Carolina - surely that must come close to being a miracle. C. Philipp (macranthos x kentuckiense)

    Calypso bulbosa in the wild

A year ago my wife and I made a trip to the Victoria, Canada area during the "Golden Week" holiday season in late April/early May. My raid array took a turd soon after returning and I wasn't able to produce any videos until I decided to get a new system going. So here it is, a video of the...
