    Average fc for phrags?

I don't believe that you can group all Phrags together under the same light levels. You have cooler growing, moisture loving Phrags like besseae, schlimii, etc that would take much less light. I grow Phrag. pearcei the same way. I just grow them under medium bright light for maybe 10 hours a...

    Repotting every year?

I agree with the hop-meister. It depends upon how you repot. Are you an aggressive repotter or a careful repotter? As far as frequency goes, everyone has a different approach. Large plants like strap leafed Paphs, large Cattleyas, Angraecum sesquipedale, large Vandas, standard Cymbidiums, etc...

    Paph rothschildianum first bloom

Well it certainly has lots of potential! Good sepals with clear markings. Petal width seems nice. All that remains is for it to gather strength and get the flower count up.

Phrag de la virgen bud not opening/maturing?

Three weeks is not that long. What is your alternative? Nothing really. It will happen.

Phrag de la virgen bud not opening/maturing?

It will open when it is ready. The flower needs to be finished forming and then it will open. Trying to come up with a way to speed up the process won’t help. Patience my young Jedi. 😃

    Phragmipedium Don Winber temps

A good friend of mine lives in Fort Myers Florida which is very similar to your climate. He grows both the big Paphs. like rothschildianum, Julius, St. Swithin and he grows a ton of Phrags as well. He has been granted a large number of awards. He grows under shade cloth outdoors and believes in...

Cattleya schilleriana var. coerulea 'Loch Raven'

I have not had much luck with schilleriana or aclandiae. But I keep trying. Very pretty flower!!!

    Greetings from Ontario!

I am finally having success with compact Cattleyas under lights after 6 years. I have a plant cart with 3 T-5 tubes, 6,500k. Plants are 5-6' below tubes. 10 hours a day from December 1 to February 1. Then 11 hours from February 1 until March 15th then 12 hours a day from then until May 1st when...

How would you rate this Paph. rothschildianum?

You are very welcome Ricardo! 👍

How would you rate this Paph. rothschildianum?

It has potential, let me say that. I agree with NEslipper, any Roth is a good Roth. Not all need to be award winners! Just look at the image you provided. Dorsal skews off to the left, the dorsal margin is a bit uneven or wavy. Synsepal is wavy too. They could be flatter. Petal stance is...

I have grown that hybrid before but not exactly the same sib cross as yours seems to be.

    Taiwanese Rothschildianum 2024

Of course not every Roth has to be awardable. But every Roth for my money is enjoyable! Yours is no exception. 😃❣️ I find it a real treat to see them all. I go back and forth between Cattleya purpurata and Paphiopedilum rothschildianum as to which is my absolute favorite orchid. Feet to the...

Watering or soaking - whats best?

I water with fertilizer three times. I use an even strength 20-20-20 blend with nutrients. To that I add a tsp. of cal. mag to it. My “it” is a gallon and a half pump sprayer. It have it set to produce a needle like stream. Every 4th watering is with just plain water. The theory being is to keep...

    Paphiopedilum lowii

Oh that is a great clonal name! I can just picture birds in flight with that petal stance. They look undulating, like they are waving in flight. The pouch is nicely colored, spotting seems very clear and concise. But I like the dorsal the most!! An extremely nice example of the species. 👍 🥰

    Phalaenopsis Miki Crown ‘16’ HCC/AOS

Sorry but I do not agree. We are talking about a plant that came before a judging team, some grex not previously awarded. What we do, or what I do as a team member is to take a look at both parents of this unawarded grex. We look at the pod parents history, including awards. We do the same for...

    Paph. Yi-Yang Santa Claus

Well, I went on line and this hybrid is posted with both the color that the ‘poster’ has and a few “vinicolor” forms. Apparently they sent the non vinicolor plant. Or at least the one that arrived was non vinicolor.

    Paph. Yi-Yang Santa Claus

There are many variables that might effect the quality and depth of color. Temperature, light intensity, fertilizer, can all create an impact. Even with a mericlone, a genetic duplicate, you can get variation. I think of a picture in a catalog as an example of what you can expect to see, not...

    Phalaenopsis Miki Crown ‘16’ HCC/AOS

I have to be completely honest in that if the candidate bore a striking similar look to the awarded mericlone, I would not award it! It is, or can be, a fine line for us to walk as judges. It has happened to me before a few times, maybe five or six that I can remember where in my mind, a very...

    Phalaenopsis Miki Crown ‘16’ HCC/AOS

I thought of another example. Phalaenopsis Baldan’s Kaleidoscope. It has more then one flower quality award and it has been mericloned.
