Why are good orchid species so hard to find?

The economics of nursery operations is really interesting, and it certainly makes sense why niche plants and species are more expensive than grocery store phals. I am still wondering though - why are mericloned hybrids an order of magnitude cheaper than mericloned species? Keeping an apples to...

Why are good orchid species so hard to find?

Why is it so hard to find half decent orchid species? I can buy awarded or awardable 6'' blooming sized cattleyas for $20 - $40. Growers mericlone thousands of them and are able to sell them for only a tad more than a grocery store phal. Are there technical difficulties with mericloning...

What are the Cattleya I can grow in the Amazon

Really almost all cattleyas, even those which originate from drier and colder environments, will grow most optimally under these tropical conditions. With my grow tent, in which I haved similated the environment from subtropical <-> center-of-the-Amazon, I find that species such as walkeriana...

    Cattleya warscewiczii coerulea 002?

I have been seeing a lot of good clones and crosses of c. Warscewiczii coerulea floating around ebay, etsy, and some other vendors such as la-foresta, orchidpots-co, etc. I own a few warscewiczii, and the difference of flower quality between plants is very high, and the plants are huge, so I...

    Cattleya walkeriana rubra Lives!

Those look really great. I am considering setting up the other half of my tent for mounted plants. I will say though that the space efficiency is not as high as with pots. With your vandas I guess you don't really have a choice and thats what got you started on indoor mounts?

    Cattleya walkeriana rubra Lives!

How do you grow plants mounted under lights? I have a few and its been a big hassle for me.

    Cattleya walkeriana rubra Lives!

Is this one royal purple as it appears on my monitor? I thought rubra c.w were more of a dark red-pink? Or does it just mean any richly colored specimen?

    Cattleya walkeriana rubra Lives!

Big and bold, I like it. In a few years that will be a great show plant :)

    Cattleya labiata tipo ‘Baby Goliath’

Are you boarding your plants in Brazil? Its very pretty - there is something appealing about species refined to the point they have the positive qualities of the best hybrids, yet retain their uniqueness and natural qualities.

    Help with choosing artificial lighting

I grow my cattleyas with weed lights (mars hydro). There are advantages and disadvantages to using the high output LEDs. The main advantage is that the fixture price for a given PAR output is very low. It is far cheaper than using the custom orchid/houseplant lights such as Orchid Hobbiest...

Welcome from NH. Lights are the way to grow here for sure!

Two color varieties on one spike

There are some "mutant" hybrid cattleyas such as Hey Song "amazing thailand" that can not be mericloned (or even divided reliably). I wonder if both phenomena are due to mosaicism or epigenetics rather than simple environmental factors.

    Cattleya Overgrowth Option

This is done so that the division can establish a nice root system before being disconnected from the mother plant. It makes sense in environments that are hot and very drying. Some other expert growers on youtube such as Stephen Van Kampen-Lewis do this as well.

    Cattleya walkeriana coerulea

You can try emailing Miranda orchids. They are the only USA vendor I know of that has plants like these. Otherwise consider buying from Brazil. It was very easy for me, I selected the plants, paid with paypal, and they were delivered to my house. If you have the time you can arrange a group...
