    Phragmipedium Ouaisne ‘James’

We took this plant in for judging by the HOS (Honolulu Orchid Society) judges yesterday, and they gave it an AM. This is from a Chuck Acker flask a few years back. It is growing under shade cloth, open to the rain, in an area with good air flow. My phrags have a love/hate relationship with...

    Phragmipedium Devil Fire ‘Pacific Heights’

My long-petaled flasklings are finally starting to bloom (it’s probably me, not them). This picture was taken (by Mel Waki) before the top flower matured, but I am happy to see their first flowers (deflasked 2019).

    Cattleya purpurata

I got this Catt from Matthias at Shogun Hawaii a couple of summers ago. I wish I had time to properly stake and groom my plants, lol. We are going to throw him in a display at the Aiea Orchid Show this weekend, after I pull a few more of his buddies out of the yard and clean everyone up a bit...

    Bulbophyllum medusae

For those of you who get AOS’s Orchids magazine, check out my Bulbophyllum medusae on page 292 of the April 2021 edition. It was in the right place at the right time on a particularly good day.

    My first PEOY

I think I actually might see some flowers on this Paph. Prince Edward of York. I have never bloomed one before (or either of its parents, for that matter). Query - should I move it? Stake it? (It’s just hanging out on some fencing with a budding buddy). I’m afraid if I touch it, bad things...

    Phrag. Robert-Jan Quene´

First to bloom from a Peruflora flask. I was hoping for one of those amazing giant-besseae ones, but not this time . . .

    Paph. armeniacum

    Yay - I bloomed one!

More Phrag. besseae babies (and a couple of their phrag friends)

Bosom buddies. First blooms. Another first-bloom flavum. Standard type. Phrag. Anthony Omeis. Phrag. Kelly Forks. Just opening, but a sweet yellow. Phrag. Lilith. Perky little puffs of pink. Phrag. Manzur la Aldea (flavum form). These are what I give my orchid buddies as starter...

    Phragmipedium Acker’s Candy

This is one of my favorite first-bloom seedlings of late. Most of this cross (Twilight x Inca Rose) bloomed out paler, kind of washed-out pinkish-red. The shape is a bit warbly, but the raspberry-red petals are rimmed with a deep red that is also reflected in the pouch. I am going to mark it...

Paphiopedilum charlesworthii fma. album ‘White Knight’ x ‘First Class’

    First bloom. Easy to grow.

    Paphiopedilum henryanum fma. christae

Day one. Will repost if it opens up more.

(Mostly) phrags on a rainy morning in Honolulu

Just a few quick snaps before work, but that will be obvious. In another thread, I mentioned that I am blooming out a bunch of Phrag Manzur la Aldea. The lighter ones came from a flavum besseae; the darker one did not. Some have side shoots; I think most if not all are first blooms. Next up...

    Silica

Yesterday evening, at a meeting on a somewhat different topic, someone mentioned the use of silica products on orchids. It was reportedly used to attempt to improve flower substance and sturdiness of the plants in general. Has anyone here tried this with slipper orchids? Does it work? Any...

    Phragmipedium Bel Croute

This is a division from Woodstream Orchids, first bloom for me, fourth and final flower. I am hoping when the plant is better established it will hold its flowers all at the same time.

Paphiopedilum superbiens (or is it curtisii?)

I’ve really tried to figure this one out, but . . . It came labeled superbiens, but after reading the posts and links, I’m confused. On the bright side, I am absolutely fascinated by the dark purple hairs on the margins, even on the pouch.

    Paphiopedilum Harold Koopowitz

My first Harold to bloom - kind of an ugly duckling . . .

    Paphiopedilum Armeni White

    First bloom . . .

    Rlc. Susan Fender ‘Cinnamon Stick’

A mericlone of a classic hybrid registered by Carter & Holmes. Easy to grow, blooms reliably on multiple leads, and has a gentle, sweet, catt scent.

    Coryanthes macrantha

This is just opening this morning. I expect it to unfurl a bit more. i

    Preparing for Hurricane Douglas

I cannot possibly shelter all my orchids, so I cut many of the blooms before the winds and heavy rain. Here’s a few.
