Anyone with experience of SMC (spider mite control)?

I buy the concentrate and dilute as instructed. When I next buy some I will be buying the commercial strength as I get through quite a bit in the warmer months! Spraying underneath leaves is the most difficult bit for leafy plants, a bit easier with my cacti!

Anyone with experience of SMC (spider mite control)?

I use SB invigorator (https://sbproducts.co.uk/) to control spider mite on my cacti and succulents (and orchids in summer) due to the lack of other options over here. It works physically so supposedly pests cannot build immunity but because if this it needs to be applied regularly. I try and do...

Polystyrene strips as a potting medium

I've used expanded polystyrene in the bottom of deep pots before and really dislike it. It breaks apart too easily when you're repotting leaving little bits of polystyrene everywhere.

    Cactus seeds?

I grow a few hundred a year. I have ordered from Mesa Garden (mainly Lithops, not cacti) a few years ago and found the seed accurately labelled and decent germination rates. One tip, don't cover the seeds (many need light to germinate) and don't be in too much of a rush to pot them on.

    Happy Turkey Day!

What is your traditional Christmas day lunch if you have turkey and all the trimmings for Thanksgiving? Or is Christmas just Round 2?

    Daily temperature differentials

Having visited and slept in the Borneo rainforest I can say that there are definitely temperature differentials between night and day! It doesn't get cold at night but, without the sun, it is noticeably cooler and feels less humid at night. I didn't take a thermometer with me on this holiday to...

    Simi hydro pot drainage holes

https://firstrays.com/semi-hydroponic-culture/general-semi-hydroponics-information/ My holes are around 3/4" on the smallest pots getting a little higher up for bigger ones. Don't know if that is right for everyone but it seems to work ok for me.

    UVC sterilizer for water

First of all is this a UVC (clarifier) or a UV steriliser? The two are different and the UVS should have a much smaller maximum distance between the lamp and the furthest distance water can travel from it. A UVC will not kill most bacteria but is strong enough to disrupt algae running through...

    Bubble Wrap Greenhouse Insulation

Over here there are small plastic fixings (Wholesale Ali Plugs | JFH Horticultural Supplies Ltd) that fit into the channel in common aluminium greenhouses that hold bubble insulation quite well, but I'm not a fan of using it if at all possible and if I was looking at leaving something up more...

    Bubble Wrap Greenhouse Insulation

I've used it too. Make sure you get UV stabilised bubble wrap or it will degrade quickly in the sunlight. Some cactus grower's keep it up year round to act as shading in the summer too.

    Paphiopedilum leucochilum ‘Double Trouble’

Excuse me? I'm not a published taxonomist but I can read a description and follow it. All the leucochilum descriptions state a pure white pouch therefore if it doesn't have a pure white pouch it should not be called that at any taxonomic level. As I said in an earlier post, this is not a...

    Paphiopedilum leucochilum ‘Double Trouble’

I didn't know it had been formerly published as forma. Glad it has as this is definitely the right level of taxonomic distinction if the only difference is the flower colour (or part of the flower colour)! Tsk, tsk on the photos though! 🤣🤣🤣 As to agreement of a name, any name validly published...

    Mini sanderianum?

First thing I would do is self it to see if it is truly genetic or simply an isolated issue with this plant. After that then experiment with crosses once you know it is a heritable feature.
